Helmed by debut director Robert Stromberg, Maleficent presents an interesting take on an old story as it focuses almost entirely on The Sleeping Beauty antagonist.

Elle Fanning (younger sister of Dakota Fanning) plays the role of Princess Aurora in this modern adaptation, starring alongside Imelda Staunton of Harry Potter, Juno Temple of The Dark Knight Rises, and actor Sharlto Copley of District 9.

There’s no doubt Jolie’s scenes are incredible, bringing the perfect combination of evil and charm to her villainous character. She does an amazing job playing the part, reminding audiences that we’re watching an Oscar-winning actress at work.

Along with Jolie’s impressive performance, the movie incorporates beautiful scenes with vibrant pops of color against the black scenery.

Disney continues to take a stand with nature, as Maleficent sacrifices herself a number of times to protect her land and its creatures.

At the beginning of the film, Maleficent has beautiful wings, but they’re taken from her. She feels powerless without the ability to fly, but befriends a crow named Diaval who makes up for her loss.

Both Diaval and Maleficent are inseparable, and are essentially extensions of one another throughout the film. Maleficent helps remind us of the beauty of nature, and how often human’s can take this beauty for granted.

Maleficent runs 97 minutes and is rated PG. Catch Maleficent in theaters on Friday, May 30.
