Last Hurricane Sandy Dog Gets New Home

(TOUCHING TALE) Approximately 500 pets left homeless after Hurricane Sandy were brought to the Pet Emergency Shelter in New York’s Nassau County. All of these animals were eventually returned to their guardians except for Bruno, a 7-year-old male Rottweiler. The Nassau County SPCA posted an add on their Facebook page seeking a new home for the adorable pooch. The response was overwhelming, and the Facebook page was shared over 900 times. The last dog homeless after Hurricane Sandy has finally found a new home.

Bruno, a 7-year-old male Rottweiler, was in the Pet Emergency Shelter in New York’s Nassau County for months after his former owner, identified only as Christopher, could no longer provide for his pet. According to the New York Daily News, the superstorm damaged Christopher’s home and cost him his job.

Two weeks ago, a post on the Nassau County SPCA’s Facebook page sought a new family for Bruno. It described the dog as “a good, intelligent Rottie who walks well” but also “has his stubborn moments.”

According to ABC, Bruno was one of about 500 pets left homeless after Sandy who’d been brought to the shelter. All of them — except Bruno — were returned to their owners or placed in new homes, and the shelter was unable to stay open for only one animal.

The photo on the SPCA’s Facebook page was shared more than 900 times as of Monday.

The SPCA also received more than a thousand phone calls and emails about Bruno, including one inquiry from a local soldier serving in Afghanistan, the Long Island Press reported.

The Daily News reports Bruno is finally heading to a new home. On Friday, rescue staff witnessed what might have been Christopher and Bruno’s last tearful goodbyes.

According to the paper, Christopher “sat on the floor and cried.” As he left, Bruno reportedly howled back.

The identity of Bruno’s new owner is expected to be revealed soon.
