A rescue cat is now the newest addition to the Monopoly game-piece family. Hasbro held a vote on Facebook, where Monopoly has more than 10 million fans, allowing enthusiasts of the game to decide which token to add and which token to toss. In the final hours of the contest, the wheelbarrow, shoe, and iron were the three favorites for elimination. The iron ultimately got the boot.
As for token additions, the choices were among a diamond ring, helicopter, guitar, robot, and a rescue cat.
Jonathan Berkowitz, vice president for Hasbro gaming marketing, told the Associated Press, “We put five new tokens out for our fans to vote on and there were a lot of fans of the many different tokens, but I think there were a lot of cat lovers in the world that reached out and voted for the cat to be the new token for Monopoly.”
Originally, PETA wanted the “Scottie Dog” to be renamed the “Recue Dog” hoping this change would bring awareness to the animal adoption dilemma. Considering cats have a higher euthanasia rate than dogs, PETA received a wonderful alternative to their wish when the Rescue Cat was named victorious.
Hasbro wrote about the new cat token stating that its design was inspired by an employee’s rescue cat named Shadow, who just recently passed away. Hasbro is very excited to pay tribute to Shadow through the new game piece.
Monopoly fans from over 120 countries voted in this contest. The Save Your Token Campaign received so much media attention that Jon Stewart from The Daily Show chimed in on the action. “Who would not pick the robot?” he stated. Stewart then went on about how he hates cats and does not understand the Internet’s love for cats. Despite Stewart’s feelings, the new Monopoly rescue cat stole the show, the Internet, our hearts, and now Boardwalk and Park Place.
