It’s that time of year again when PETA gives out its award for the sexiest male and female vegetarians in Hollywood. This year, the prize went to newly re-engaged Kristen Bell and beau Dax Shepard, though Dax abdicated his title, saying he’d fallen off the vegetarian bandwagon. However, there are still plenty of celebrities who hold true to their meatless diet.
The country singer first grabbed the attention of audiences in 2005 as the fourth winner ofAmerican Idol, but Underwood first gave up meat as a child after seeing her parents castrating calves. She’s since gone on to musical success and even nabbed PETA’s sexiest veg title twice, once in 2005 and again in 2007. She lost out this year, but there’s no telling if she might nab a third win in the future.
Anne Hathaway can credit Catwoman to her newfound veganism and the perks that come with it. In an interview with USA Today, Hathaway said that she switched to a vegan diet to be able to fit into her snug Catwoman cat suit. “After I finished the rooftop fight, I ate four slices of pizza and split a bottle of red wine with my guy. I hadn’t eaten like that in months. I felt so ill. By the time the movie finished, I decided to give veganism a try. You can’t go hog-wild as a vegan.” The results definitely show.
Grammy Award winner and actor Ne-Yo tweeted that in the New Year he resolved to go vegan. He asked his Twitter followers for vegan recipes and snack ideas and gives frequent updates on his progress with the vegan lifestyle. In February, he conceded that he needed the protein from fish to fuel his dance moves, but remained adamant about staying on track with everything else. “Went vegan for the new year mainly just to test my discipline,” he tweeted. “But after reading up on animal cruelty and what not, much more meaning to it.”
This sexy ass-kicker is most known for her tough roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dollhouse, but she’s got a soft spot when it comes to animals. Dushku announced that she was going vegan in 2011 after watching Forks Over Knives, a documentary that focuses on negative health effects of animal-based products and processed foods.
He’s asked to be called Yasiin Bey, but he’ll always be Mos Def. Prolific actor and rapper Mos Def hasn’t been too vocal about the origins of his vegetarianism, but in a USA Today interview, the proud father shared his veggie ways with his son, Fidel.
The list wouldn’t be complete without this year’s reigning queen of hot stars that eschew meat. Recently, Kristen Bell has been gearing up for the crowd-funded big screen adaptation ofVeronica Mars, but she can take some time out to celebrate her win. Bell has been a vegetarian since age 14 and has held strong ever since with a carefully balanced diet of fruits and vegetables. “I’m constantly monitoring how colorful the food on my plate is, which is a trick my mom taught me. I make sure to eat really dark power vegetables, like broccoli and kale,”said Bell.
Who doesn’t love a British accent? Russell Brand was PETA’s choice for sexiest vegetarian celebrity, representing the guys in 2011. During her marriage to Brand, Katy Perry went meat-less for two years at Brand’s encouragement, but was ultimately unable to stick to the diet. The Daily Mail reported that even while on drugs, the long-time vegetarian still stayed away from meat. “‘Even as a junkie I stayed true to vegetarianism. I shall have heroin, but I shan’t have a hamburger.” Luckily, he doesn’t have to worry about that dilemma these days.
This stunning singer/songwriter won the third season of The X Factor in her native England in 2007 and has been busy since. Lewis is currently working on her fourth album and, like a few others on the list, is a former winner of the title, having been named PETA’s sexiest celeb, as well as PETA’s Person of the Year in 2008. Lewis has been a vegetarian since childhood, but recently went vegan in 2012. She continues to show love for her furry friends, even going so far as to turn down a £1 million offer to open a sale at Harrods, due to the fact that the legendary London department store carries clothes made from animal products.
Jared Leto is one industrious veggie. He is the front man of band 30 Seconds to Mars, involved in Hugo Boss’s fragrance Hugo Red, and is getting press for his upcoming role in Dallas Buyers Club. In an interview with British GQ, he credited his vegetarian diet as his personal fountain of youth. “I’m pretty healthy so I think that helps a lot. I’ve been that way for a long time—20 solid years of eating vegetarian/vegan and taking care of myself. That probably helps the preservation process.”
There’s no denying Maggie Q—who plays super spy Nikita on the CW thriller—is gorgeous, but she’s put those great looks to work for a great cause. Q is a vegan and has posed nearly nude in an ad for PETA to help promote vegetarianism. If there’s anything that could convince guys to give up meat, that might be it.
No animals need to pay the iron price for Peter Dinklage. The Game of Thrones actor took up vegetarianism at age 16 and never looked back. Recently, he filmed a PETA testimonial, asking fans to join him in embracing a cruelty-free lifestyle.
Tyler the Creator
It’s not often that vegetarianism finds its way into rap lyrics, but the topic has popped up a few times in the raps of Tyler the Creator, also known for his role in late-night sketch comedy showLoiter Squad. “Make sure you never meet again like goddamn vegans,” he raps in his song “IFHY.” Ouch.
