While the onslaught of Hurricane Sandy continues to impact the lives of millions across the U.S. and Canada, first responders are working around the clock to help citizens and their pets.
Though the storm is being referred to as “one of the most exceptional—and potentially destructive—storms to strike the Northeast in modern history,” animal rescuers remain hopeful that pets will stand a better chance than they did in 2005 during Hurricane Katrina, which left an estimated 250,000 animals stranded and struggling for survival.
Their optimism is due to the high number of pet-friendly shelters in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia.
“Up until actual storm conditions started, we had heard of literally hundreds of animal-friendly shelters opening,” said Niki Dawson, director of disaster services for the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). “Pets were either being welcomed at human shelters, or other resources were being provided if human shelters didn’t welcome pets.”
However, with hundreds of animals still stranded, disaster relief organizations like the Animal Care & Control of NYC, North Shore Animal League America, ASPCA, and the HSUS are doing their best to provide these frightened animals with food, water, and shelter.
