(ANIMAL TESTING/MONKEYS) China Southern Airlines is discontinuing the shipment of monkeys and other primates to labs in the United States. The ban went into effect on March 21 and animal advocates everywhere are rejoicing.

Animal rights organizations like PETA have campaigned against China Southern and other airlines to end the shipment of animals to labs where they are confined and subjected to cruel experimentation.

Recently, actress Pamela Anderson wrote a letter of appeal to China Southern Airlines, and it seems the pressure from celebrities and PETA has encouraged China Southern to do the right thing and help prevent animal cruelty.

“PETA is thrilled that China Southern Airlines has finally recognized that cruelty shouldn’t fly and has stopped shipping terrified monkeys to pain and misery in laboratories,” says Justin Goodman, director of PETA’s Laboratory Investigations Department.

Labs are seeing fewer airlines willing to transport research animals, and their supply is effectively being cut off.

There has been a 40 percent decrease of the importation of these animals into US labs in the last five years, saving many monkeys from mistreatment and death.

With China Southern no longer shipping primates, the only major airline still doing so is Air France.
