Jessica Chastain was determined to remain committed to veganism while filming the Oscar-nominated film “The Help,” and yet she also decided it was necessary to fully embrace her southern side.

So, what did the actress do? She ate fried chicken, but made sure it was vegan!

Anyone who has seen the film fell in love with Chastain’s character Celia Foote. After all, she was nominated for an Academy Award. Celia, who is determined to be the best housewife for her husband, wants to learn how to make fried chicken. In one particular scene, she even eats the southern delicacy.

According to Foodista, Chastain ensured the chicken was vegan. “The scene where I was eating fried chicken, they made me vegan fried chicken. It probably [didn’t taste as good] as fried chicken. They did an amazing job.

She continued, “They took a turkey dog and tofurkey and battered it, and deep fried it. I haven’t had meat in so long. I’ve been vegan for five years and vegetarian for 15 years, so if I had had meat, I wouldn’t have been able to do the scene. They all thought I was just chowing down.”

Well, she pulled it off. Could you tell the difference?

Chastain also had to gain weight for the role, which she did in the healthiest of ways. “I had to be soft and curvy, so I ate a lot of soy. …Soy helps you become curvy because it has estrogen in it. So what I would do—and this is really gross—is buy cartons of soy ice scream, microwave it and drink it,” she told E! Online.

The 35-year-old actress even inspired her mother to change her eating habits. Her mother now owns and runs a vegan restaurant.

Way to go Jessica!
