Samantha Ellis, Global Animal
It’s been years since we’ve seen anything new from Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Fozzie Bear and the rest, but their new movie The Muppets, opening November 23, 2011, brings them back into the limelight. In true Disney fashion, The Muppets pulls out all the stops.
Staring Jason Segel, Amy Adams, Chris Cooper, and all the Muppets we know and love, The Muppets begins with Walter, the self-proclaimed world’s biggest Muppets fan, going on a trip with his brother Gary (Segel), and Gary’s girlfriend Mary (Adams) to Los Angeles to visit Muppet Studios.
Unfortunately for Walter, Muppet Studios is nowhere near as glamorous as it once was. Worse than the dilapidated state of the Muppet Theater is oilman Tex Richman’s (Cooper) plan to demolish the theater to drill for oil. The only way to save the theater is for the Muppets to get back together and hold a telethon to raise $10 million.
Like all the Muppet movies, The Muppets has many musical numbers including an all chicken rendition of Cee Lo Green’s popular song “F**k You,” and the classic “Rainbow Connection.” Unlike most musicals, however, The Muppets characters know that they are singing and dancing — Gary even apologizes at one point for squishing the flowers he got for Mary during a dancing number. It’s obvious that co-writers Nicholas Stoller and Jason Segel and director James Bobin had a lot of fun creating this film. They may have even had as much fun making The Muppets as I had watching it.
The Muppets offers something to both old fans and new. Add plenty of references to old Muppet shows, cameo appearances from just about every celebrity in Hollywood, and a few allusions to some of your favorite films and you’ve got a wonderfully nostalgic movie. Not only will audiences enjoy every minute, but they can rest easy knowing that The Muppets was given the American Humane Association’s “No animals were harmed in the making of this movie” certification.
We give The Muppets 5 out of 5 paws!
