June Is Adopt-A-Cat Month! Here’s How You Can Help Save Felines In Need

(PETS/CATS/KITTENS) Every spring and summer, thousands of newborn kittens flood animal shelters across the U.S. And with kitten season upon us, it's time to celebrate Adopt-A-Cat Month and help save these cats in need. Animal shelters across the United States have an estimated influx of six to eight million animals per year, many of whom end up being euthanized if a suitable home is not found for them. A collaboration between the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), Maddie's Fund, and the Ad Council, the Shelter Pet Project is celebrating Adopt-A-Cat Month with radio, TV, out-of-home, and interactive public service announcement (PSA) campaigns to help all shelter pets—not just cats—find loving forever homes. —Global Animal

McLemore and his relationships with the residents of Woodstock, Alabama, or, as he christened it: “S*** Town.” -- Global Animal

5 Films That Will Make You Want To Change Your Diet

(ANIMAL ACTIVISM/FACTORY FARMING) There is a new epidemic sweeping across the globe, but it seems nobody is doing anything about it. That’s probably because this epidemic doesn't affect people--it affects animals. Millions of helpless animals are tortured, abused, and mistreated just so we can feed our faces. Factory farming is big business, and it's destroying our world. Factory farming is the process of raising a high number of animals for the purpose of food, in the most efficient way possible--and treating them less like living beings than like a resource to be maximized, whatever the cost to their, and our, quality of life. According to the ASPCA, over 99 percent of farm animals in the United States are raised in atrocious factory farms. To help show how terrible these factory farms are, here are five documentaries that will make you want to change your diet. -- Global Animal

Established by the Humane Society of the United States, Humane Society International (HSI), and the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association (HSVMA), National Spay Day spotlights the power of affordable and accessible spay-neuter services. Not only does spaying and neutering pets save the lives of feral cats and stray dogs who might otherwise be euthanized in shelters or killed on the streets, but sterilizing house pets also allows animal shelters and rescues to better provide for homeless animals in need. There are many life-saving benefits of spaying or neutering pets, so don't wait to take action! Visit the HSUS resources below and make every day World Spay Day! -- Global Animal

Curtains Close For Ringling Bros.’ Cruelest Show On Earth

(CIRCUSES/ANIMAL NEWS) In a major victory for circus animals everywhere, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus announced its "Greatest Show on Earth" will be closing for good in May. Kenneth Feld, chairman and CEO of Feld Entertainment, which owns the circus, attributes to the closure to declining attendance, high operating costs, shifting public tastes, and ongoing pressure from animal rights groups. Feld also claims ticket sales declined more drastically than expected after the company removed elephants from its shows last year. While an increasing number of people agree forcing animals to perform is cruel and unnecessary, it's clear that public opinion has finally put an end to the suffering. Gone are the days of animals living in cramped, barren conditions for long periods of time, where they are forced to perform tricks through physical violence, fear, and intimidation. But now it's time for all circuses to follow suit and end their wild animal acts. Read on to learn more about the elephant-sized decision, and for more on the rise and fall of Ringling Bros. circus. -- Global Animal
