Pet Obesity: A Growing Problem

(PETS) Over 100 million dogs and cats in the U.S. are currently classified as overweight or obese--up from 80 million five years ago. While an estimated 60 percent of cats and 56 percent of dogs are considered above the average weight, many would argue that dog and cat obesity in the U.S. is mirroring the human obesity epidemic. But there's not as much stigma with animals being overweight as with people. The worst part? Many pet parents find their pets' weight gain of little concern, or even "cute." It's safe to say the public is more tolerant of overweight pets than they are of thin ones. But the truth is pet obesity can bring on a number of health problems including diabetes, arthritis, liver and kidney diseases, high blood pressure, heart failure, and even some cancers. Read on to learn more on what's contributing to the pet obesity epidemic and how to stop it. -- Global Animal
