Meet The Most Trafficked Mammal In The World

(WILDLIFE TRAFFICKING) The little-known pangolin is a tiny, nocturnal, Armadillo-like creature who is very shy. Their large Keratin scales that cover their skin help protect them from predators. But unfortunately, these scales do not protect them from humans. In certain parts of Asia, the Keratin scales are used for medicinal purposes. Just last week, Ivory Coast officials confiscated over 3 tons of pangolin scales in transit to China. This massacre of an estimated 4,000 pangolins has devastated their population. Read on to learn more about the pangolin and see how you can help save these innocent animals from traffickers. -- Global Animal

A Doggy Deficit? How America Is ‘Running Out’ Of Bomb-Sniffing Dogs

(WORKING DOGS) Given the rise in terrorism in recent years, the demand for detection dogs is high--and so are prices (exceeding $25,000 per dog). While researchers have yet to develop a device as efficient as a dog's nose, the supply of bomb-sniffing dogs is dwindling worldwide, and experts say the U.S. is particularly vulnerable. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has 1,000 dogs in its workforce, and needs at least 350 new dogs annually to replace those who retire. In order to meet this quota, TSA agents and buyers for the U.S. military rely on brokers who source dogs from puppy mills in Eastern Europe. But in reality, we shouldn't be importing dogs at all when the U.S. euthanizes millions of perfectly trainable dogs each year. Many of these dogs are either purebred with excellent scent capabilities including, but not limited to, Pointers, German Shorthaired Pointers, Labradors, or crossbreeds of these dogs. Instead, we must turn to animal shelters and rescue organizations, and train these dogs for security purposes. Read on to learn more about this doggy deficit, and how the U.S. could become self-sufficient when it comes to detection dogs. -- Global Animal

New York City Crushes Millions Of Dollars’ Worth Of Illegal Ivory To Save Elephants

(ANIMAL NEWS/WILDLIFE CONSERVATION) NEW YORK CITY -- In a move to combat the illegal ivory trade that kills countless elephants each day, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation destroyed over two tons of ivory in Central Park on Thursday. While the practice is controversial, the destruction of piles of confiscated tusks, trinkets, statues, and jewelry sends a powerful message that the material should have no worth. Even though opinions regarding the value of destroying ivory are mixed, the hope is that the act will encourage an end to elephant poaching. More than a dozen nations--including China, France, and Kenya--have also destroyed their confiscated ivory stockpiles in recent years. Read on to learn more about the federal ivory ban, and the significance of Thursday's ivory crush taking place in the middle of the world’s most famous public park. -- Global Animal
