Courts Lay Down The Paw: Abused Pets Get A Legal Voice

(PETS/ANIMAL LAWS) Last year, Connecticut became the first state to allow judges to appoint lawyers and law students as volunteer advocates for pets in cases involving cruelty, abuse, and neglect. Alternately, animal advocates can also be requested by a prosecutor or defense counsel. What's more, the volunteer advocates are authorized to conduct investigations in hopes of reinforcing prosecutors who are overburdened with cases or may consider crimes against animals to be less of a priority. Since Desmond's Law went into effect, volunteer advocates have been appointed in five cases, which are being closely monitored by lawmakers, legal scholars, and animal activists in hopes of adopting similar measures in other states. The groundbreaking legislation tackles the disconnect between how people treat animals and how the law treats animals in court, and ultimately aims to convince the judiciary to treat animal cruelty as a serious crime. After all, it's not "just a dog." Read on to learn more about Desmond's Law and the fight for justice for our furry friends. -- Global Animal

Hurricane Harvey: How To Help Pets In Need

(HELP ANIMALS/ANIMAL RESCUE) HOUSTON -- In the same type of catastrophic flooding that beset Texas during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, record rainfall from Tropical Storm Harvey has battered the nation's fourth largest city this past week. The flooding has left 25 dead and caused more than 30,000 people to flee their flooded homes. While many pets are left behind, animal rescuers remain hopeful that animals will stand a better chance than they did 12 years ago during Hurricane Katrina, which left an estimated 600,000 animals killed or stranded. Thanks to the passage of the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards which forever changed the way animals are treated during emergency situations, first responders can now rescue pets just as they save people. Efforts to save animal victims are well underway as floodwaters continue to rise. Global Animal Foundation, a 501(c)(3) that funds emergency animal rescue worldwide, is collecting donations to disperse between vetted organizations working on the ground in the affected areas to help with medical costs for injured animals, boarding and food, and reuniting lost pets with their guardians. Please consider supporting the efforts to save animals in critical peril. Read the New York Times article below for more on the Hurricane and citizens' tireless efforts to save their beloved pets amid the chaos. -- Global Animal

Meat-Free Monday: Vegan Macaroni Salad

(MEATLESS MONDAYS/VEGAN RECIPES) With Labor Day weekend just around the corner, why not give your mom's macaroni salad a vegan makeover? This classic summer staple is perfect for potlucks, picnics, barbeques, and pretty much any summertime gathering. This typical deli-style macaroni salad is chock-full of crunchy vegetables like broccoli florets, carrots, green onions, red bell peppers, and celery--giving it a nice crunchy texture. But the main ingredient that takes this recipe to the next level? The smoked tofu. What's more, this salad is super easy to prep ahead of time. Whip up the dressing and prep the vegetables, tofu, and macaroni noodles separately. Add the dressing 30 minutes to an hour before serving, mix together, and refrigerate until ready to eat. Meet Squish The Flamingo

(WILDLIFE RESCUE/BIRDS/CUTE ANIMAL VIDEOS) Squish the baby flamingo hatched from an abandoned egg that zoo keepers found and incubated at the Jurong Bird Park’s Breeding and Research Centre in Singapore. A month later, on June 7, the baby chick was born, weighing 90.5g. Keepers worked around the clock to care for him, feeding him a special formula, similar to a flamingo’s crop milk, multiple times a day. Today, Squish weighs a healthy 1.2kg. To develop strength in his long, growing legs, Squish goes on daily short walks, wearing handmade blue booties custom-made for him to protect his delicate feet from the hard ground surfaces outside the centre. Once he reaches three months, he will be integrated into the flamingo flock flock at the park’s Flamingo Lake, managed by Wildlife Reserves Singapore. -- Global Animal
