Cecil The Lion’s Son Meets Same Fate As Famous Father

(ANIMAL NEWS/WILDLIFE) Just two years after the slaughter of Cecil the lion, one of the famed lion's cubs was killed in similar circumstances during a trophy hunt in Zimbabwe earlier this month. The six-year-old lion named Xanda, who was in his prime, was shot and killed just outside the bounds of Hwange National Park--not far from where Cecil was killed in 2015--in an area where big game hunters can legally hunt animals for sport if they possess the proper permits. A well-studied lion like this father and critical to conservation efforts in Zimbabwe, Xanda was wearing an an electronic GPS satellite collar, fitted by researchers monitoring his movements in the area. His death on July 7 was first indicated by a lack of movement data from the collar. The killing of Xanda just demonstrates how trophy hunters have no remorse and have learned absolutely nothing from the international outcry following Cecil's death. They continue to poach even though there are as few as 20,000 African lions remaining in the wild. When will the Lions of Hwange National Park be left alone? Continue reading below to learn more about the consequences of Xanda's death and why it's absolutely crucial that countries like Zimbabwe shift away from the trophy hunting industry. -- Global Animal

Oh Deer! Hero Dog Saves Drowning Fawn

(DOGS/ANIMAL RESCUE) NEW YORK -- A 6-year-old English Labrador retriever named Storm is making headlines after pulling a drowning baby deer to shore in Port Jefferson Harbor this past weekend. The heroic dog's guardian was taking Storm for a walk Sunday when the dog suddenly dove into the water, swam out toward the fawn, grabbed the animal by the neck, and then hauled the young deer back toward the beach--a moment that was luckily all caught on film (see video clip below). With the help of Strong Island Animal Rescue League, the fawn is currently in stable condition at Save the Animals Rescue Foundation. Thankfully, the animal is expected to make a full recovery and will eventually be returned to the wild. "She didn't have a chance, really, staying back in Iran there wasn't really a chance for her." Despite everything she's been through, Silver continues to heal and was also fitted with a wheelchair that's helping her walk. California Cat Killer Sentenced To The Max

(ANIMAL NEWS/ANIMAL CRUELTY) In a case that's been closely monitored by animal rights advocates across the country, a judge sentenced a San Jose man with the maximum term allowed (16 years) after he admitted to kidnapping, torturing, and killing nearly two dozen cats in a gruesome crime spree spanning over two months. The 26-year-old man, Robert Farmer--who the judge referred to as a danger to society--pleaded guilty to 20 counts of felony animal cruelty, one count of attempted felony animal cruelty, as well as two misdemeanors. The judge's verdict was a bittersweet outcome for those whose pets began disappearing almost two years ago. While many of the families of the cat victims are pleased with the judge's decision, others believe the maximum 16-year sentence is still not long enough. But just imagine how many lives were saved by taking this predator off the streets. In addition to giving Farmer the maximum sentence, Judge Chatman also took pains to list every cat victim by name--demonstrating the significant role our pets play in our families' lives.
