October Is Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month! Howl To Help Homeless Pets

(SHELTER PETS/ANIMAL ADOPTION) There's much more to celebrate this month than Halloween. October is designated as National Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month. During this month, the ASPCA hopes to raise awareness about shelter animals and promote involvement within the community—whether it's simply spreading the word or bringing a lovable dog into your home. To kick off the initiative, the ASPCA has launched #31DaysOfRescueDogs, a social media campaign to raise funds for homeless pets. By sharing photos of their shelter dogs at, pet parents will enter for the chance to win prizes and have their photo featured on Animal Planet's Pit Bulls and Parolees. Participants must post one photo of their favorite rescue pet every day, and each post will encourage their friends to donate $1 a day. Users can visit to learn more and sign up. Read on to learn more about this month-long event and see how you can participate. — Global Animal

8 Myths Uncovered About Pet Food

(PETS/PET CARE) Having a pet is a huge responsibility. Deciding and following a particular diet guide for a pet can be tricky and daunting, as a lot depends on the species, breed, and the life stage of a pet. One's diet guide should completely be pet-specific. Their food should be well-balanced, nutritious, easily digestible, and most importantly, safe (free of deficiencies or other harmful chemicals). fortunately, most people make general assumptions or follow advice from other pet keepers and draft out their own diet sheets. What they don’t realize is that without performing thorough research on pet diet information, some decisions may be harmful to pets. You must have a proper understanding of raw and dry food, as well as the byproducts and how different animals react to different foods and ingredients. You should also be aware of their allergies or intolerance to certain grains or meats. If you are unsure about what your pet should be eating, please contact your vet, and let your pet enjoy a happy, healthy life. The Life of a Pitbull: Lulu in Santa Monica

(PIT BULLS/DOGS) As Global Animal founders, we have met and worked with many dogs, and want to share our experience with the latest addition to our family. Lulu was adopted at an NKLA (No Kill Los Angeles) event through "Angel City Pitts" three years ago, when she was three years old. She was rescued from an abusive situation and taken as evidence of inhumanity because she was kept in a cage and constantly bred from the time she could reproduce. Her DNA test shows she is 100% American Staffordshire Terrier. She came with medical issues and in order to spay Lulu, the veterinarians had to cut through scar tissue from back-yard C-sections. They also cropped her ears, possibly to prep her for fighting, which results in regular ear infections. Lulu had no real idea how to be a dog, couldn’t climb stairs, and never barked. But we could see that she was a special spirit who simply needed a loving home. We went out that morning to go to a museum exhibit, got diverted by the NKLA event, and came home with Lulu! We were a bit concerned about how she would fit into our household, but our first dog Stanley showed her the ropes, our ancient cat Omar set the boundaries about who was boss, and Lulu slowly began to relax into her new home. Now she’s loving life! A word about the breed: Lulu is the most stable, loving dog we have ever encountered. As gentle as a lamb, she is non-reactive in every situation, whether with an aggressive dog, a two-year-old climbing on her back and even taunting squirrels and speeding skateboarders. We love her (she never leaves my side) and we wanted to share our story and pictures to encourage other dog lovers to consider this breed. They were once the family dog of America and if you watch the incredible documentary on Netflix called Champions, about the rehabilitation of the Michael Vick dogs, you will see their true nature is stable, gentle and forgiving. Like any dog, their loyalty can be distorted through torture and abuse, but the misinformation about this breed is at epidemic levels. A new book called Pit Bull tells the truth. Their jaws don’t lock any more than any other dog, their stability is on par with the Labrador, and they are fantastic with children. Places where breed specific bans have been enacted against pit bulls have not shown a decrease in dog bites. If any dog is unstable, look at the other end of the leash for the reason.
