(ANIMAL SHELTERS/DOG WALKING) If you’re one of the millions of people playing Pokémon Go–now the the biggest mobile gaming app in U.S. history–here’s one way to make the game even better!
The Muncie Animal Shelter in Indiana is currently seeking out avid Pokémon Go players to help walk adoptable dogs while they play.
Since individuals are walking all over in search of the game’s fictional creatures scattered throughout the real world, they make the perfect dog-walking candidates.
The shelter posted a photo to its Facebook page on Tuesday asking gamers who are on the hunt for rare Pokémon to help real-life animals get some exercise, too.
“Trying to hatch an egg or catch rare Pokémon? Come down to the Muncie Animal Shelter to walk one of our dogs while you get your steps in!” the Facebook post reads.
“Just come to the front desk and say you are here for the Pokémon dogs!”
The offer stands between 10am and 5:30pm, every day of the week.
The Facebook post has since been shared more than 8,000 times.
“The idea is that they take the dog on kind of an adventure for the day,” the shelter’s director Phil Peckinpaugh told The Huffington Post.
Peckinpaugh, whose nephew and daughter both play the game, envisioned the idea after noticing dozens of people all over Muncie searching for Pokemon with their smartphones.
“It would be great if every one of those individuals had one of our dogs with them,” he said.
If walking a dog while playing the game, one should be extremely aware of their surroundings and not accidentally walk into traffic or any other dangerous situation.
And even if you live nowhere near Indiana, it’s very likely your local animal shelter would love to have you volunteer to walk a shelter dog during your Pokemon pursuit.
Peckinpaugh is encouraging other shelters to use the idea to bring in more volunteers.
“I hope it catches on like fire,” he said.
We, here at Global Animal, think this is a fantastic idea and we hope animal shelters across the country will take advantage of this great opportunity.
