A World Of Trouble: SeaWorld’s Third Whale Death In Six Months

(ANIMAL NEWS/SEAWORLD) This week, SeaWorld San Antonio lost its third whale in six months, adding to the mounting criticism against the notorious chain of marine theme parks. The 18-year-old female orca named Unna passed away yesterday after suffering from a months-long fungal infection called Candida. Although the average life expectancy of orcas in the wild is 30 to 50 years, the average age of death for SeaWorld's orcas is 13 years old. In November, the park also lost a beluga whale named Stella who was exhibiting gastrointestinal problems, and in July, a newborn beluga whale died after being born premature. In response to the heap of negative publicity, SeaWorld San Diego recently announced plans to nearly double the size of its orca enclosures in the upcoming years. But what will this mean for the other SeaWorld parks? And how will this move prevent more captive whale deaths? Read on to learn more about the park's questionable history and share your thoughts in the comments below. -- Global Animal
