Is Your Dog Having Seizures?

(PET CARE/DOGS) Many pet guardians misdiagnose a dangerous seizure as simple canine idiosyncrasy, like pacing or whining, because they don't understand how seizures affect animals and how to spot them. When your dog can't tell you he needs a visit to the doctor, you have to be the one who knows when things are wrong. Being diligent and educated about your pet's health is just as important as those trips to the dog park. Ciara Black is a Global Animal contributor from the Dog Help Network, a resource for dog health related websites. Read on to learn about how seizures affect dogs, and what you can do to help. — Global Animal

The Truth About Declawing: What Vets Aren’t Telling You

(ANIMAL WELFARE/PETS) Declawing a cat is the equivalent to amputating a human finger at the third knuckle, and yet twenty-two million domestic cats per year are declawed in the United States—a third of which reap serious behavioral and physical consequences from the procedure. Due to a general ignorance and perpetuation by greedy vets, the procedure remains one of the most common in the United States for family pets. The detrimental results of this procedure has led to its ban in over twenty countries but it's a trend not followed by the U.S. due to the backlash from national veterinary associations who reap tremendous financial gain from the practice. — Global Animal

A Thing Of The Past? SeaWorld Shuts Down Shamu Shows

(SEAWORLD/ANIMAL NEWS) Today, as part of its comprehensive strategy to try and redeem the company's maligned reputation, SeaWorld unveiled plans to phase out its longstanding orca shows at its San Diego park next year. In its place, a new orca experience in a more natural setting is set to debut in 2017, described as "informative" and designed to carry a "conservation message inspiring people to act." On Friday, California Congressman Adam Schiff also announced plans to introduce the Orca Responsibility and Care Advancement (ORCA) Act which would end breeding captive orcas, ban the capture of wild whales, and put an end to the import and export of the species. If approved, the bill would ensure this is the last generation of orcas to live in captivity.
