(ANIMAL NEWS/BULLFIGHTING) Bullfighting spectators in Peru were sent running to safety over the weekend after a bull unexpectedly jumped the barricades and charged at them.

While bullfighters attempted to lasso the bull, things took a turn for the worse when fans began provoking the animal by tossing beer and other objects into the bullring.

The one-tonne bull reacted by jumping the security barrier, storming headfirst into the stands.

Amateur video footage (below) shows spectators pushing each other and jumping into the center of bullring to avoid the enraged bull.

Four people were reportedly injured during the event, but fortunately no one was killed.

Peru holds more bullfighting events than any other country in Latin America. This particular event was part of the closing of the traditional feast celebrating the patron saint of Taraco, in the province of Huancane, Puno.

Authorities are now investigating the event after it was reported there was a lack of security.

It was also reported that none of the bullfighters at the event initially wanted to fight the bull do to the animal’s “wild nature,” but were persuaded to participate in the fight anyways.

This horrific incident is just another example of why bullfighting events must be relegated to the history books.

TAKE ACTION: The European Union is spending approximately £30 million per year to support bullfights. Click here to send a message to European Commissioner Phil Hogan today, asking him to end the EU’s shameful financial support of bullfighting.
