Rescued Cougar Learns To Walk Again

(ANIMAL VIDEO/WILDLIFE RESCUE) Tampa-based Big Cat Rescue discovered Mickey the cougar living in a nightmarish backyard zoo in Alabama that was operating without a license. When rescuers found him, he was emaciated, his teeth were rotting, and his legs were so debilitated that he could barely walk or even stand-up. After further veterinary examination, it was determined the cougar's knees were completely ravaged and without any remaining ligaments or cartilage. Determined to help give Mickey a chance at a happy life, vets tailored surgeries for him, using artificial ligaments to stabilize his knee. With the help of physical therapy, doctors helped him learn how to miraculously walk again. See how Mickey is recovering in this touching video. -- Global Animal

As Free As A Bird: Rescue Birds Swiftly Return To The Wild

(WILDLIFE/BIRDS) Common swifts, a bird known for their long wings and speed, spend most of their lives in flight. This fragile yet agile creature can live for up to 20 years; however, if a baby swift lands on the ground after leaving the nest, the bird will most likely face death. Judith Wakelam, who has committed her life to the bird species, defies acts of nature by rehabilitating hurt baby swifts and releasing them back into the wild. Well-known for her abilities to rehabilitate this gentle bird, Wakelam rescues common swifts from vets, as well as the general public, from all over eastern England. Her talent and dedication prove crucial during the rehabilitation process, and Wakelam accounts how simply nursing a single swift to health can forever change one's outlook on wildlife conservation. Read the beautifully written essay below to enter the minds of animal rehabbers, and discover the wonder behind releasing a captive animal back into its natural home. —Global Animal

Double The Joy! Twins For National Zoo’s Celebrity Panda

(ANIMAL NEWS/WILDLIFE CONSERVATION) It's a great week to be a panda! On Saturday, Mei Xiang, a giant panda at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, gave birth to two healthy cubs. Mei Xiang has two surviving children Bao Bao, who was born in 2013, and Tai Shan, who was born in 2005, but this is the panda mom's very first set of twins. Giant pandas have long been an endangered species, and newborn pandas are a very rare occurrence--largely in part because the bears are known to be poor breeders. These two new cubs mean double the joy for not only the National Zoo, but also the many breeding and conservation programs aimed at saving this rare species. Read on to learn more about Mei Xiang's sudden miracle. -- Global Animal
