Captivity Kills: Another Life Lost At SeaWorld

(SEAWORLD/CAPTIVE WHALES) SAN ANTONIO -- A newborn beluga whale born in captivity at SeaWorld San Antonio died on Sunday, just three weeks after being born. According to a SeaWorld press release, the female calf was born one month prematurely on June 20 and appeared smaller than normal at 120 pounds and four feet in length. Despite being given marine mammal infant formula seven times a day in addition to nursing from her mother, the baby beluga did not gain weight as rapidly as park veterinarians expected. -- Global Animal

Sphynx Kittens “Help” Make The Bed

(FUNNY ANIMAL VIDEO/CATS)What is it about cats and making the bed? Veterinarian Vanda Santos says she loves nothing more than caring for her new litter of sphynx kittens. Harbor The Raccoon Has A Splash

(FUNNY ANIMAL VIDEO/RACCOONS) This raccoon named Harbor was rescued in 2011 after police found him on an impounded boat. For four years, he had been held captive in a two-foot-long cage, living in squalid conditions. It was very likely he had never stood up before, was unable to climb, and walked on his wrists instead of his feet due to a disease caused by malnutrition. But after being taken in by a California-based rescue, Animal Advocates, Harbor got a second chance at life. As this video shows, Harbor now might just be the happiest raccoon ever. Although he was deemed unreleasable, the former "pet" is loving life in his sanctuary home. -- Global Animal

Pit Bull Discrimination – A People Problem?

(DOGS/DOG BREED DISCRIMINATION) Pit bulls have been the target of breed-specific legislation for years despite evidence claiming such laws do not diminish the number of overall dog attacks. Support for these laws is based on the misconception that pit bulls are more dangerous and prone to aggression than other dog breeds. However, the seemingly high numbers of pit bull attacks are, in fact, a result of the high population of pit bulls in the United States. When considering the frequency of attacks by percentage, the number is actually low. Due to inaccurate perceptions of the pit bull, many shelters around the country even put down the animals before giving anyone the opportunity to adopt them. With more and more evidence proving pit bulls are no more dangerous than any other dog breed, education for the public is needed to ensure these animals are not treated unfairly. Why Penguins Can’t Fly

(ANIMAL SCIENCE/PENGUINS) Millions of years ago, penguins lost their ability to fly, and now scientists finally know why. The tuxedoed birds are some of the best divers out there, but unfortunately good flippers don't make for good flyers. Scientists say, once penguins sacrificed flight, their wings and body size most likely evolved quite rapidly since flying no longer placed constraints on body form. Researchers were confused as to why the aquatically-skilled animals chose sea over air, but they hold a promising theory regarding the species' perplexing decision. Continue reading for the answer to this mind-boggling question, and learn more about prehistoric flying penguins. — Global Animal

(WILDLIFE CONSERVATION/ELEPHANTS) Poaching and ivory trading poses serious ethical challenges for wildlife conservationists and animal activists. Studies show if current poaching trends continue, the African Elephant will be extinct within the next decade. It's crucial to expose this pressing issue to help save the species as we know it. One feature documentary--set to be released in 2016--seeks to do just that. Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s Vulcan Productions has teamed up with Red Bull's Terra Mater Film Studios to create Ivory Rising, a film exposing the horrors behind poaching and ivory trading. Both film production agencies are committed to creating environmentally conscious films that invoke positive change. -- Global Animal
