In April, the eighth largest Canadian Supermarket chain announced their intention to move away from the use of cruel gestation crates to confine pigs over the next nine years. Gestation crates are used to confine breeding pigs so tightly, the pigs are unable to move for a large portion of their lives.

The Retail Council of Canada said “sows should be housed in an environment where their pregnancy, health and well-being are taken into highest consideration.” Animal welfare groups, not surprisingly, welcomed the announcement.
