Cowtown Rodeo Claims Casualty

(ANIMAL CRUELTY) The famous Cowtown Rodeo in New Jersey is in hot water after a very disturbing video surfaced showing one of the horses dying during a live performance. Duke, a 9-year-old horse, went into convulsions after allegedly being hit with a shocking device prohibited by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). An investigator from Showing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK), a group dedicated to animal activism, witnessed the horrific death and said, "That horse was cruelly and illegally shocked. People think rodeos are entertainment, but they are not. Rodeos are brutal, vicious events where animals are tortured, and sometimes, as in this case, they are killed." SHARK is now filing animal cruelty charges with the SPCA against Grant Harris, the owner of Cowtown Rodeo. Chris Christie Picks Pork Over Pregnant Pigs

(POLITICS) To the dismay of animal activists across the nation, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has vetoed a bill intended to prevent farmers from using gestation crates for pregnant pigs. Christie justified his action saying it was up to New Jersey's Board of Agriculture and Department of Agriculture to establish "the proper balancing of humane treatment of gestation pigs with the interests of farmers whose livelihood depends on their ability to properly manage their livestock." But unfortunately, gestation crates are far from humane, so it's hard to imagine how this could possibly be good news for the pigs. Read on to learn more about Christie's decision to veto the bill. — Global Animal

New Mexico Tramples On Animal Rights

(HORSES) NEW MEXICO — Federal officials on Friday approved a Roswell company’s application to convert its cattle slaughterhouse into a horse processing plant in a move paving the way for the resumption of horse slaughter in the U.S. While it has not yet been cleared to operate, the New Mexico facility is yet another step closer to becoming the first horse slaughterhouse in the United States since Congress effectively banned the practice seven years ago. Proponents of domestic horse slaughter believe horse abandonment and abuse have increased since slaughter was banned in 2006, and claim it is better to slaughter the animals in a humane facility as opposed to having them starve to death or be sold at auction houses where they are shipped to inhumane facilities in Mexico. Animal rights groups and the Obama administration oppose the industry and believe it is morally wrong, as horses are our domestic companions as opposed to livestock. A Cruel Chinese Fad: Live Animal Keychains (VIDEO)

(ANIMAL CRUELTY) Earlier this month, we learned about a cruel fashion trend that incorporates live animals as accessories on the runway. Sadly, it appears this trend persists not only in high-end fashion, but also on the street corners and subway stations of China. A new cruel and disturbing Chinese fad are keychains with live goldfish, turtles, and salamanders. Kept in bags filled with colored, oxygenated water, the animals cost around $1.50 each.
