Tofu is taking over!
On June 3, 2013, Chipotle Mexican Grill launched its newest vegetarian option called “Sofritas” throughout Southern California, making the item available in all California restaurants.
Sofritas, which consists of shredded tofu, braised chipotle chiles, roasted poblanos, and an assortment of spices, was initially tested in seven San Francisco Bay area restaurants and soon was expanded to 96 units in Northern California.
Now, the popular product has swept through the Golden State. However, Chipotle company officials say the product is still in its testing phase and declined to discuss any possible nationwide rollout.
Sofritas is made with organic, non-genetically modified tofu from the Oakland, Calif. artisan producer Hodo Soy Beanery. The innovative item serves as a protein option for burritos, bowls, tacos, and salads.
Chipotle’s founder, chairman, and co-CEO, Steve Ells, said in a statement that the vegetarian addition is a continuation of the Denver-based chain’s efforts to revolutionize the way people think about and eat fast food.
The progressive company, which is already very popular with vegetarian and vegan customers, previously tested another vegetarian menu item called “Garden Blend.” Yet, the company was not completely satisfied with the product and began developing Sofritas instead.
Chipotle is extremely pleased with the success of the Sofritas trial run and is very excited to offer the item in all of its California restaurants.
