(CELEBRITY NEWS) Country darling Miranda Lambert has a big heart for animals—particularly dogs. Mrs Blake Shelton already has five dogs in her family, but she also makes sure to open her house to foster animals. The “Gunpowder & Lead” singer told People magazine, “Every time I find one [dog], we keep ’em until we can find them the right home. You kind of know what dog fits with your family. We keep ’em until we find a family they fit with.” The star also admitted that husband Blake Shelton was a little baffled with her animal loving ways at first, but that he is used to it now. Between her ever-expanding trophy collection and menagerie of mutts, Miranda Lambert has a full house – and both she and husband Blake Shelton prefer it that way.

“He’s used to it now,” Lambert, 29, tells PEOPLE about how Shelton has learned to accept her penchant for taking in stray animals, though she admits, “At first I think he was like, ‘What’s going on? We have a zoo.'”

Case in point: Last month, after bringing home a dog she found by the side of the highway, the country star named him Pistol Andy (in honor of her girl group the Pistol Annies) and attempted to find him a home. And she did – kind of.

“His owner contacted the shelter and had pictures that proved that he belonged to her, and he climbed out of the fence,” she says. “So he went back to his original home.”

But helping animals in need is ingrained in the singer’s DNA. “We really foster,” says Lambert, who is also the spokesperson for The Pedigree Feeding Project, an initiative that provides a year’s worth of dog food to one deserving community. “Every time I find one, we keep ’em until we can find them the right home. You kind of know what dog fits with your family. We keep ’em until we find a family they fit with.”

Meanwhile, the country stars have fallen into a rhythm with their own furry brood, now down to five dogs: Jessi and Waylon, who stay at the couple’s farm, and Black Betty, Cher and Delta Dawn, who live with the pair.

“We feel like it’s a good balance because we can give them all equal attention,” Lambert says. So, does that mean there aren’t plans for a sixth pup? “I don’t think we need anymore for our family,” she says.
