“We promote conservation of local wildlife, habitat protection, reduction of animal disease and education on responsible care of pets.” — Misión Gaia.
Misión Gaia is a Colombian non-government organization which, along with habitat protection and animal welfare, serves to protect Mother Earth and its resources.
Focusing primarily in the Santa Marta area of Columbia, members and volunteers work to contribute to the conservation of biological resources and animal welfare and to promote sustainable development and support educational strategies in the Caribbean Coast.
The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is the highest costal mountain range in the world, which reaches 5.700 m and is host to a complex network of ecosystems. The area is also home to over 300 bird species – of which nearly 20 are endemic. This environment is unique, and Misión Gaia works to keep this special part of the world preserved, protected, and sacred.
One of the programs under Misión Gaia is an animal health and reproduction control project called the Habitat Conservation And Animal Welfare Program. Under this project Misión Gaia develops periodic disease control as well as spay and neuter campaigns for cats and dogs. They also work on public health parameters, promote conservation of local wildlife, reduce the presence of disease in the communities, and raise awareness on the responsible care of animals.
Their primary objective is to use the underlying project as a guide for the construction of local sanitary management and reproductive control plans for cats and dogs, with special focus on public health, animal welfare, and wildlife preservation. They hope to sustainably and humanely lower the population of cats and dogs, change the way the local people view their animals, introduce education of animal care and regularly bring in veterinarians to the area.
This is a brilliant organization which is doing great things for animals and wildlife conservation. If you’d like to help reduce the number of suffering animals on the streets, please make a donation for the promotion of spay and neuter campaigns. If you have interest in volunteer travel to strengthen habitat protection and animal welfare, please consider this extraordinary program.
