A bottlenose dolphin was found dead over the weekend on Elmer Islands Wildlife rescue in Louisiana, with a bullet hole behind his blowhole. The Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are offering a $1,500 reward for information that can lead to the conviction of the killer.

Campaign manager for WDCS, Courtney Vail said, “These dolphins continue to face impacts from the Gulf oil spill, fishing gear entanglements and habitat loss. It is extremely disturbing that they are also subjected to brutal attacks and vandalism from the public. This is not the first time dolphins have been killed or wounded by gun shot, and those responsible must be brought to justice.”
As if shooting dolphins wasn’t bad enough, earlier this summer in Dupont, Alabama, a dolphin who had been stabbed to death by a screwdriver washed ashore. Feeding the dolphins has become so common in the Gulf that dolphins will come right up to humans, not expecting to be mutilated or harmed.
The Marine Mammal Protection Act forbids harassing, harming, killing or feeding wild dolphins. The maximum penalties are a year in jail and up to $100,000 in fines. Yet, this hasn’t kept people from hurting these amazing creatures. You can leave information or an anonymous tip about the stabbing or shooting by calling 1-800-853-1964. Let’s bring these disturbed individuals to justice!
This is sooo awful. I hope they get slaughtered too. Sorry, but I can't help thinking this is the same kind of person that would hurt kids!
