Deadly and destructive fires have been sweeping the western United States for days now. In addition to people and homes, animals are also being affected and rescues and shelters are asking for your help.

Wildfires have been burning through primarily Colorado, including the Waldo Canyon Fire near Colorado Springs, which has resulted in one death and has destroyed about 350 homes, Huffington Post reports. This is the most vicious fire the state has seen. Montana, Utah and Wyoming have also been gravely affected.

According to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), Colorado has seen 12 fires burning through 181, 426 acres, with 35,000 residents evacuating. The HSUS wants pet owners to remember not to abandon their pets. If they can’t take their animals with them, leave them with a loving shelter.

The HSUS has been keeping in touch with the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, the Humane Society of Boulder Valley and the Larimer Humane Society to help protect and save animals. All are offering temporary emergency shelter for those pets.

In addition to pets, livestock in Utah, particularly in Sanpete County, and those rural areas in Montana that do not have animal shelters are being assisted by HSUS’s Animal Rescue Team.

Even celebrities are tweeting in support of these animals. Actress Amanda Schull, known for her guest star roles on several TV shows like “Pretty Little Liars,” has shown her softer side through Twitter.

“The fires in Colorado are gravely affecting many animals. If you can, help the Humane Society care for some of them. https://www.hsppr.org/sslpage.aspx?p …,” the actress tweeted last week.

How can you help? Here are a few animal rescue shelters located in Colorado that are pleading for assistance from all.

• Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region
• Dumb Friends League
• Larimer Humane Society
• Humane Society of Boulder Valley

Remember, even if you don’t live in these areas, you can lend a helping hand from anywhere in the country.
