(CELEBRITY PETS) Mickey Rourke is known for his love of animals, especially dogs. He’s so attached to his pooches that he even mentioned them in his Golden Globe speech. The Hollywood old-timer now has a new pal, a stray Romanian dog named Foxy, whom he found on the set of his new movie. Romania has a very large population of homeless dogs, and a very harsh policy allowing their slaughter because they are deemed a “public health hazard.” So, kudos to Mickey for giving a dog in need a second chance and a new home. — Global Animal

Mickey Rourke may look tough on the outside, but he sure does have a soft spot and kind soul when it comes to animals.

Recently, while filming his new flick “Dead in Tombstone” in Romania, the 59-year-old stumbled upon a stray dog on set and adopted him.

For years now, the actor has shown compassion for animals. When he won the 2009 Golden Globe for his role in “The Wrestler,” Rourke even included his pooches in his acceptance speech.

“The ones that are here, that aren’t here anymore, because sometimes when a man’s alone, that’s all you got is your dog,” he said. “And they meant the world to me.”

Rourke’s pups have been there for him for the long haul, especially when he suffered depression. His Chihuahua, Loki, helped lift his spirits. Sadly, she died in 2009 at a remarkable 18-years-old.

In a 2009 interview with Barbara Walters, Rourke said, “I think I hadn’t left the house for four or five months, and I was sitting in the closet, sleeping in the closet for some reason, and I was in a bad place. And I just remember I was thinking, ‘Oh, man, if I do this.’ And then I looked at my dog, Lowjack, and he made a sound, like a little almost human sound. I don’t have kids, the dogs became everything to me. The dog was looking at me going, ‘Who’s going to take care of me?’”

His pets seem to have truly helped him through the tough times.

Rourke’s new dog is named Foxy. Welcome to the family!
