Tazi Phillips, Global Animal

He’s known as a funny man, but Ricky Gervais is serious when it comes to animal testing. In a new video, the creator of The Office holds an adorable rabbit while speaking out against animal testing, saying, “We urgently need a worldwide ban on this cruel and unnecessary suffering.” The video coincides with the launch of Cruelty Free International’s new global campaign against the outdated practice.

Cruelty Free International will place animal testing on the agenda of many governments for the very first time. Today, there is no worldwide ban on animal testing for cosmetics. Over 80% of the world still allows animals, including rabbits and guinea pigs, to be used in cruel experiments. Make-up moguls Mary Kay, Estée Lauder, and Avon recently came under fire for misleading the public on their animal testing policies. While the companies have been on PETA’s cruelty-free list for over 20 years, they still follow Chinese regulations that require animal testing for all cosmetics sold in China.

Earlier this year, Gervais used is celebrity status to help shut down a UK dog breeding farm. For his new campaign, the comedian and animal activist urges, “It’s time to close the door on animal testing for good.”
