(ANIMAL NEWS) WISCONSIN — Could you imagine having enough toes and fingers to say the alphabet on? That’s the case for Daniel the cat, a rescued stray brought to Milwaukee Animal Rescue Center. Owner Amy Rowell saved the tom from animal control after noticing his outgoing personality. The second trait she noticed was the two extra toes on each paw equaling 26 total, extremely close to the world record of 28. Daniel is drawing publicity for the center, which needs to change location because of high rent. Asking for $26 per donation, the center has already raised $80,000. With a happy home for Daniel and more financial stability for the rescue center, we see the extra digits as an extra special gift. — Global Animal

Meet ginger-and-white tabby Daniel, the cat with 26 toes.

This cute tom has two extra toes on each foot, making him a near record breaker in the toe stakes.

With his freaky feet, he is helping Milwaukee Animal Rescue Center in Wisconsin raise their profile, and the money they need to move their building due to a rent increase.

They are seeking small donations of $26 – or $1 per toe, so essentially Daniel will be footing the bill.

The gimmick has so far raised an amazing $80,000 (£51,000) since October 24, with around $50,000 (£32,000) coming from $26 donations. The organisation now hopes to raise $120,000 (£77,000) by December 23 to become more financially stable.

His condition is called polydactylism and cats like this are often given nicknames including “boxing cats”, “mitten cats”, “mitten-foot cats,” “snowshoe cats”, “thumb cats”, “six-fingered cats” and “Hemingway cats.”

Daniel’s 26 toes are only two shy of the Guinness world record, and the footloose tom was originally going to be sheltered out, however Amy Rowell, owner of the Animal Rescue Center in Greendale believes this cat was brought to her by fate.

She found the 26 toe-d tom at animal control. Animal Rescue Center tends to adopt cats that would otherwise be put down. He was very clearly saying, “I need to be rescued, I’d like to be your friend, please pay attention to me”,’ she said. ‘And when a sign is that obvious, we tend to not ignore it.”
