(ENDANGERED SPECIES) – Conservationists are already fighting the shortsighted decision to delist gray wolves with a lawsuit against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service. Despite its endangered species status, the gray wolf population is not fully recovered. With wolf hunts being planned within hours of the delisting announcement, conservationists are acting as quickly as possible to save the targeted wolves. – Global Animal

Alliance for the Wild Rockies, Friends of the Clearwater, and WildEarth Guardians today filed suit in federal court in Montana against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for delisting wolves in Montana, Idaho, and portions of Utah, Washington, and Oregon.

The decision to remove gray wolves’ protected status from the endangered species act was announced yesterday, leaving at least 5,500 wolves susceptible to attack.

Public wolf hunts are already planned this fall in Montana and Idaho, and Montana officials are proposing a 220 wolf quota for their first hunt since 2009–up from the 75 wolf quota stated in that year. According to Idaho Fish and Game Director Virgil Moore, the state is now in charge of all aspects of what he calls wolf management.

“We believe there is still enough snow on the ground that we can pursue those animals via aerial gunning and try to reduce those numbers,” Virgil told The Lewiston Tribune.

Michael Markarian of the Humane Society retorts, “Not only did the White House and Congress sign off on eliminating federal species protection by legislative fiat, but now it appears that federal wildlife agents will actually be the ones to conduct the shooting of wolves from aircraft.”

Groups against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service say that the wolf delisting rider can not simply outweigh the Endangered Species act. The rider reinstates a 2009 wolf delisting rule that was already determined illegal in August 2010 by Montana Federal Judge Donald Molloy.

“We are doing all we can to hold back the tide of wolf-killing in Montana, Idaho, and elsewhere in the Northern Rockies,” said Gary Macfarlane of Friends of the Clearwater. “This ecologically important species is being unfairly targeted out of ignorance and intolerance and now lacks a federal shield from killing.”

“Congress has never before delisted species from the Endangered Species list. There is a well-established legal process that applies to every other species. Congress simply should not get into the business of making decisions over which of our nation’s imperiled animals and plants will and will not get protection,” said Michael Garrity, Executive Director of the Alliance for the Wild Rockies.

“We’re back in court for two reasons,” concluded Garrity. “First and foremost, it’s to continue to protect wolves from indiscriminate slaughter. Second, someone has to stand up when the basic tenets of our government are under attack by unscrupulous politicians and that would be the Alliance, Friends of the Clearwater, and WildEarth Guardians.”

  1. I fill that the anti wolf hunting groups would love to see the decimation of the deer and elk herds in Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana.  That way their dreams would be fulfilled as they could then add deer and elk to the endangered list,  putting an end to ALL hunting!

    • Wolves prey naturally on elk and deer. Those animals have been coexisting for centuries, with much greater amounts of wolves roaming the wild. I’m sure there were more elk and deer as well, but not anymore, since people like to hunt them for sport… not that we even need to. But wolves do, so isn’t cruel and arrogant to kill wolves off for fear that they’ll try and survive by feeding themselves as they always have? Kind of tragic to condemn these creatures cause just might cut into one of our many leisurely hobbies.

And these so-called “wildlife organizations” sound like hypocrites, catering to political interests instead of thinking about the well-being of the environment. It’s a damn shame.

      • Alot of us don’t hunt for sport. We hunt to feed our families. Like our fathers and grandfathers used to do. Why should hunting be eliminated because you feel it’s not right, and it’s eliminating  food for a wolf. I prefer to eat an animal who’s meat is leaner, less fattening and better for you than any cow you buy in a grocery store. Not to mention it is cheaper, and a much more rewarding and spiritual experience.
Besides that, the elk and deer populations now are much less than they were when wolves roamed these parts. They will not have enough to survive eventually. The wolves numbers will be too high at some point. What do you suggest we do then? The predator prey numbers have to be in balance. meaning the predator needs to be managed. Managed meaning killed, culled, whatever. Doesn’t necessarily mean to give room for hunters. Means give room for wolves and elk and deer to thrive. There are literally entire herds in specific areas wiped out because of these wolves. Is it ok to endanger 1 species for another? NO.
And why should I have these wolves shoved down my throat? I had no say in whether or not I wanted wolves in my backyard. You arrogant environmental wacko’s decided from your couch, in your big city, watching these wolves on tv and thinking they are beautiful, to re-introduce a species not native to the area. It is called a non-essential experimental species for a reason. WE DO NOT NEED THEM. so why can’t 5500 wolves in the northern states be enough for you? You idiots think that Malloys ruling is gold.  his ruling  in 2009 said that states borders cannot be defined as areas where an animal is endangered and not.  But you idiots don’t realize you’ve done that very thing. Except you use the US border as a defining line. Any Gray wolf in the US is endangered. Yet across the border there are more than 100,000. Endangered?? I don’t think so……….. I bet none of the pro-wolf people actually live in wolf country.  I do. And I see first hand the devastation they do. I have to live with it….you don’t.

        • This is for hippyhater- you are a moron, probably of European desent & you have an inbred mentality about wildlife. The Native Americans new well how
to live in harmony with all of nature, & they were ten times the better hunters
than any white jerkoffs such as you. You say your forefathers had to hunt to
live, & that is true, but this isn’t the 1800’s you IDIOT! I find it so amusing how
you big, tough hunters try & justify your sick, ignorant, un-needed “hobby” but
science has an answer for it- it’s called “penis envy”! You know- all of you
loser hunters know- deep in your small hearts that nature is more powerful than you- in every way imaginable. She always has been, She always will be. So
rather than accept that, you jerkoffs stand at a distance & shoot animals, rather than be men (which none of you are- your a joke at best) & attempt to take this animal face to face. Why won’t you do this? Well, you all are very weak & dumb, but your not totally ignorant- you know the Wolf, Bear, Cougar, hell even a Moose is so much better than you, stronger than you, faster than you & yes a 100 times smarter! You moron hunters all know this, but can’t accept it, so you stand from 50 or 100 yards away & pull a trigger…. BIG MEN!! You all are a disgrace to the human race, & when your time comes you will be judged on your actions here- do you boneheads really believe The Creator put these animals here for you to do what you morons do? He created every living thing, & was most happy with His creations- our job is to be stewards to these creations- not slaughter! And the “penis envy” thing? Scientist have proven that hunters have inadquate sexual performances, & small penises, so to make up for that, they go out & kill things- makes them feel “big”…. know this all you loser small penis hunters- you WILL reap what you sow…
