The lonely dolphin, separated from family, seeks consolation by clinging to a buoy like a teddy bear.

Cove Guardian, Libby Katsinis, puts it best: “Has this world learned nothing from history? We all know beyond a doubt that slavery is morally wrong, so why is it considered acceptable to snatch a dolphin out of the wild, tear it away from its family, teach it to entertain, and then sell it into a lifetime of slavery? The fact that we justify this shameful act of humanity by saying that dolphins are of lesser importance than humans makes me question the sensibility of our species. When in reality both man and dolphin are both highly dependent on one another for survival as a whole.” – Global Animal

TAIJI, JAPAN – A dolphin captured in the annual dolphin slaughter in Taiji, Japan is being held in solitary confinement in a small, filthy pool at Dolphin Base, a mile from the slaughter where captured dolphins are held for sea parks around the world.

Misty, as the dolphin has come to be called by volunteers monitoring her condition, is in a small tank that appears to be extremely unsanitary, filled with dead fish and algae, and with no filtration system. The dolphin treads water while continually holding a yellow buoy in its mouth for consolation, like a lost child holding onto a teddy bear.  Dolphin base has admitted the dolphin is sick to the Sea Shepherd Cove Guardians, who are monitoring Misty and have taken the video and pictures here.

Dolphins are highly social creatures and their need for interaction in order to survive is incredibly high, according to dolphin experts. Cove Guardian Andy Romanowski reports that when this lone little dolphin noticed his camera being hoisted over the top of the fence, he started to move around and at one point even tried to get the camera, a foreign object in the dolphin’s realm, to play with the buoy it was holding in its mouth.

  1. this dolphin is now showing the world what the “cove” really is…a hell on earth….with frightened or stubborn “fishermen and women” continuing a way of life that is outdated and dangerous (the injesting of whale/dolphin meat now loaded with lead). the keeping of live creatures is no longer desirable…if a wild animal is injured and being cared for .. that is one thing….but to capture for entertainment..in whatever form…is inhumane….we can now go to them…or view via media outlets….a living can now be made with ecotourism…how sad the government is not steering these people of taiji in this direction. misty…may you get well and be allowed to go home….hopefully the first of many now living in capivity to do so…or to sanctuaries to live out their lives in peace with others of their own species.

  2. This is a heartbreaking sight. To have a social animal in such an isolated filthy environment must be contributing to its poor health. Not only did it witness its own pod being slaughtered , it now faces captivity not fit for any living being. This is unjust and we should all express our outrage no living being should be treated this way.

  3. Thank you for posting this story! The truth of what is happening in Taiji MUST be told, everyone should be aware of the atrocities, and all efforts are needed to end the horror for these animals.

  4. This dolphin is not the only one in trouble in Taijii. There are 8 dolphins housed together in a similar pool not far from Misty. It is apparent these people have no regard for the welfare of these dolphins. Isn’t there laws that these people need to adhere to? What can we possibly do to make a difference for these dolphins. SPREAD AWARENESS, and for that THANK YOU SO MUCH GLOBAL ANIMAL!!!!
