Leave it to maverick Pete Bethune to actually make friends with his captors aboard a Japanese whaling vessel! In this interview with Global Animal, Pete Bethune corrects the hype that he and other Sea Shepherd volunteers are a bunch of “vegan, hippie, activist terrorists” as often portrayed in the Japanese media. Bethune explains how Sea Shepherds are ordinary people from all walks of life, most of whom do not have activists backgrounds, and simply care deeply about preserving whales from slaughter in a whale sanctuary.

Bethune goes on to describe how he became friends with three crew members aboard the Shonan Maru II once they had a better understanding of why much of the world opposes whaling. Friends, as in, even exchanged email addresses and keep in touch! – Global Animal
