Argentina’s Exotic “Petting” Zoo

(ZOOS) An hour outside of Buenos Aires, Argentina, at the Lujan Zoo, patrons pay 130 Argentine pesos (about $25) to pet and feed exotic animals. The 37-acre zoo has around two dozen exhibits featuring lions, tigers, and bears. Oh my! In 2011, a YouTube video was uploaded showing zoo-goers petting a full-grown lion who looks anything but comfortable. Claudio Nieva, the zoo’s general manager, claims the animals are properly trained to be around humans, yet animal advocacy groups are saying the risks are still significant. Feed Or Free: Demand Justice For Buenos Aires Zoo Animals

(ZOO ANIMALS) Local residents debuted a short film exposing the appalling conditions animals are subjected to at Colon’s Zoo in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The footage revealed an entire animal community plagued by abuse and neglect on a day-to-day basis. Many disturbing scenes were shown including lions, emaciated and malnourished; bears and tigers, living in unsanitary and abnormally small caged areas; and monkeys, confused and frightened by the thunderous roar of a large crowd at the neighboring soccer field. Read on about Colon’s Zoo, and sign the petition to stop the maltreatment of these animals. — Global Animal

Baby Elephant Lily Here To Stay

(ZOOS) Since her birth, there has been much speculation about what would happen to baby elephant Lily from the Oregon Zoo. The calf’s future has been in question due to a contract between the zoo and the notorious elephant rental company, Have Trunk Will Travel (HTWT). For the purpose of genetic diversity, the Oregon Zoo mated their female Rose-Tu with HTWT’s male, Tusko—leaving the future of the calves a bit uncertain. Fortunately, the zoo has taken the proper steps to ensure that Lily will remain with her mother by purchasing the rights to the elephant calf. Although this is the preferred outcome, it is distressing to learn that an abusive organization like HTWT received $400,000 that will help them continue their cruel elephant training techniques. Abusive Roadside Zoo Denied License

(ANIMAL NEWS) Jambbas Ranch Tours, located in Fayetteville, North Carolina, is a self-proclaimed “natural zoo” that has been under fire from PETA and the Animal Legal Defense Fund for quite some time. The animals suffering in this facility have been forced to endure unsanitary conditions, hazardous enclosures, inadequate veterinary care, and insufficient quantities of food and potable water. Thankfully, a court ruling has overturned the USDA’s motion to discharge a lawsuit against the agency which contained a decision to renew Jambbas Ranch Tours’ license. (ANIMAL INTELLIGENCE) KOREA — Koshik, the elephant, has surprised elephant researchers with his acquired ability to speak human words. Not having the same anatomical structure as humans, Koshik has cleverly found a way by means of lowering his trunk into his mouth and moving his lower jaw to formulate human-like sounds. Wildlife Finds Refuge At Popcorn Park

(ANIMAL SANCTUARY) NEW JERSEY — This week, over 200 abused, ill and exploited animals find solace in Fork River, New Jersey at Popcorn Park Zoo. The zoo was established gradually after the staff of a local adoption center began receiving calls concerning wildlife in distress. As the compassionate persons began rehabilitating these animals, more cages were built and the facility expanded to its current, seven acre reserve of land. Popcorn Park Zoo also has a large adoption center for animals from overcrowded shelters. The zoo and kennel run mostly on donations which counteract the cost of the staff and does not include the cost for supplies and food. The amazing organization is part of the statewide Associated Humane Societies and sees 75,000 visitors a year who can feed air-popped popcorn to the animals. Bears Are Smart, Thinks Science

(ANIMAL INTELLIGENCE) ALABAMA —  New research suggests black bears can interact with a touch-screen computer for a yummy reward, proving their intelligence to the scientific community. At Alabama’s Mobile Zoo, researchers found that bears can distinguish between the number of dots on a screen when associated with different colors and sounds. Never mind the known facts that bears can find food, locate mates, sense danger with their incredible sense of smell, cover their tracks from hunters, and remember where they encountered food ten years ago.
