ZANESVILLE, OHIO – In yet another case of animal versus man, animals lost big after a resident convicted of animal cruelty released a veritable zoo of 51 exotic animals and then shot himself. The wild animals, including lions, tigers, leopards, and grizzly bears, roamed residential streets on a rainy night until police shot and killed all but three of them. – Global Animal

(ZOOS) Instead of educating children about the lives of animals in the wild, zoos more often teach children to view animals as a form of entertainment, according to child psychologist Sujatha Ramakrishna. In this excerpt from her upcoming book Raising Kids Who Love Animals, Dr. Ramakrishna explains how even zoos with informational signs and the best habitats cannot compete with the educational value of a nature show on TV that films animals in the wild. Read on to learn how Dr. Ramakrishna came to the conclusion that all zoos are bad, even the “good” ones, and what taking your children to a zoo could actually teach them about animals. — Global Animal

(TRIPOLI ZOO ANIMAL NEWS) LIBYA — Today the Tripoli Zoo received funds from the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) to provide food and water to the animals. They do currently have some water, but they still need more supplies. The biggest concern now is food — the cost to feed the animals is nearly $2,000 a day. In order to continue getting aid to these animals, IFAW is asking for donations so they can continue sending funds to the zoo. Read the press release from IFAW about the current state of the zoo and the needs of the animals, and then donate to the cause here. — Global Animal

Getting aid to these animals is very difficult because the situation in Libya remains unstable, and it’s impossible to known how the new government will react to foreign groups entering the country. Find out what rescue organizations are doing to get help to these animals. — Global Animal

(ZOO ANIMAL NEWS) LIBYA — The Tripoli Zoo was abandoned during fighting in Libya’s capital last week. Left to fend for themselves during the chaos, the zoo animals went without food and water for seven days. Although the fighting has ended, the animals remain in crisis. With low resources and few workers, the animals aren’t getting enough food. What’s worse: there is almost no fresh water, and in the sweltering summer heat of Northern Africa, fresh water is a necessity for survival. Read on for more information and a video detailing the plight of these zoo animals. Through Global Animal Foundation, the nonprofit charity arm of Global Animal, we are currently searching for organizations on the ground and effective ways to take action. Please keep checking back to see what you can do to help these animals in need. — Global Animal
