Actor Lays Down The Law On Seal Hunting

(CELEBRITY ACTIVISM) Actor Jude Law is joining celebrity activists like Ke$ha and Sarah McLachlan and speaking out against the annual Canadian seal slaughter. The Sherlock Holmes star recently teamed up with PETA and wrote a letter urging the World Trade Organization (WTO) to uphold the EU’s ban on seal products. The handsome Brit wrote, “I’m writing to urge the panel to uphold this ban, which is in line with the wishes of compassionate people all around the world, including the majority of European citizens. Even local sentiment is turning, and a lack of markets has led Canadian officials to seriously examine whether the slaughter should end.” The WTO’s final hearing on the issue will be held on April 29. When A Seal Loves A Penguin

(ANIMAL BEHAVIOR) A strange phenomenon, known as “misdirected mating,” has some researchers speculating on the correlation between sexually frustrated, lower ranking fur seals and their desire to mate with penguins, an entirely different class of animal. “These things happen in wildlife,” says veterinarian Heather Harris. But when mixed mating results in no viable offspring, the behavior is difficult to understand from an evolutionary standpoint. Researchers conclude that sexual violence does occur in the animal kingdom, and in extreme cases, males’ coercive behavior may spill over to forcing themselves on other species.
