Turtle Trek: The Final Frontier

(ANIMAL RESCUE) BALTIMORE — For three rare sea turtles, the journey home has certainly been a welcome one. In late 2012, Chet, Biff and Two-Bit, were unfortunately amongst a number of hypothermic sea turtles who washed ashore on various Massachusetts beaches. However, with help from the National Aquarium’s animal care facility in Fell’s Point, Baltimore, these three turtles have finally made their way back to the comfortable waters of sunny Florida. Louisiana Lifts Sea Turtle Protection Rule

(ANIMALS IN POLITICS) LOUISIANA — A  new house bill proposed in Louisiana will block a federal rule requiring that all shrimping boats be equipt with turtle excluder devices (TEDs), a trap door that allows turtles to escape from shrimp nets. Right now skimmer trawls and butterfly-type-fishing nets are not required to have TEDs, they just have to pull up their nets every hour to release turtles. This method is highly ineffective, as most of the turtle suffocate before the nets are pulled up. Manatee Rescued From Florida’s Red Tide

(ANIMAL NEWS) FLORIDA — On Tuesday a manatee was rescued in Bonita Springs from symptoms related to red tide poisoning. The toxic marine algae that causes red tide is often fatal to marine and coastal species when ingested or inhaled. Sea Turtle Eggs To Be Moved Away From Oil

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plans to collect about 70,00 eggs, mostly by hand, and move then to a temperature controlled warehouse. While the oil has been deemed dangerous to the hatchlings, there is a chance that baby sea turtles could die because of the stressful moving process too.
