New Sea Turtle Proposal Rocks Florida Beaches

(OCEANS) The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has recently announced a proposal that may help preserve the loggerhead sea turtle’s natural habitat. If passed, the entire coastline of Palm Beach County and a portion of Broward County will be deemed critical habitat for the marine reptile. This designation on certain South Florida beaches does not mean public areas will be turned into wildlife preserves, but federal agencies will have to consult with the USFWS before embarking on projects that may affect protected areas. The critical habitat proposal has definitely stirred up controversy between environmental groups and land developers with both parties firmly standing behind their beliefs. Thousands Of Baby Turtles Released (VIDEO)

(WILDLIFE CONSERVATION) BOLIVIA — In an attempt to boost the region’s turtle population and ultimately rescue the species, thousands of turtle hatchlings were recently released into a river in Bolivia. Because these animals are extensively hunted for their meat and eggs, South American turtle populations have drastically fallen due to excessive hunting. More than 120,000 Yellow-spotted Amazon River turtles and South American river turtles—which can reach up to a meter in length—were released into the Amazonian river as part of a project to eventually release 3.8 million baby turtles in Bolivia and Brazil. Take a look at these baby turtles take their first steps across the sand. — Global Animal

Louisiana Lifts Sea Turtle Protection Rule

(ANIMALS IN POLITICS) LOUISIANA — A  new house bill proposed in Louisiana will block a federal rule requiring that all shrimping boats be equipt with turtle excluder devices (TEDs), a trap door that allows turtles to escape from shrimp nets. Right now skimmer trawls and butterfly-type-fishing nets are not required to have TEDs, they just have to pull up their nets every hour to release turtles. This method is highly ineffective, as most of the turtle suffocate before the nets are pulled up. Read on for more information, and click out “Take Action Mouse” to help stop Louisiana from blocking sea turtle protections. — Global Animal

Sea Turtles And Sharks Are No Match For Longlines

(FISH INDUSTRY) The Marine Stewardship Council allowed two eco-certifications for the use of longlines for swordfish fishing that will effect sea turtles and sharks drastically. For every swordfish caught, two sharks are killed.  Every year 1,200 endangered sea turtles are hooked by longlines, resulting in drowning. If swordfish are caught by longlines, consumers need to know what they’re buying and that the fishing method used resulted in preventable deaths. Read on for why many are arguing why longline caught swordfish should be labeled in the market. — Global Animal
