How One Rescue Dog Survived Against All Odds (VIDEO)

(GLOBAL ANIMAL)—Arwen, a 10-year-old pit bull mix, was one of 89 dogs rescued from a hoarder in the Mojave Desert. Along with the others she was kept in poor outdoor conditions. During the cold winter season the dogs had no shelter, and barely any food or water. Karma Rescue, who also got other animal organizations involved, stepped in and began their tough work of relocating the dogs to safe homes. But everyone seemed to be especially touched by Arwen, who was so unsocialized and had so little interaction with humans that she had no idea how to respond to them. Arwen had almost no teeth because she chewed on the hoarder’s metal fence, and she had a very troubling eye condition brought on by the constant raw exposure to the rough weather. Alex, a volunteer, decided to foster Arwen until her health improved, but very quickly fell head over heels in love with the sweet dog, and decided to permanently adopt her. Read on to find out about Arwen’s ordeal and how she’s doing now.—Global Animal

Naki’o, The World’s First Bionic Dog (GALLERY)

(DOG PICTURES) After becoming the first dog to be fitted with a complete set of prosthetic paws that work naturally and allow him to run, jump, and swim, Naki’o has been given a new leash on life. The mixed-breed puppy was abandoned at a foreclosed Nebraska home and was eventually discovered alone in the cellar, with his paws and tail frozen into a puddle of icy water. Fortunately for Naki’o, he met an extremely compassionate veterinarian assistant named Christie Pace of Colorado Springs, Colorado, who was looking to help an animal in need. ”I have a soft spot for rescue animals in general. I was looking for something different, unique. I wanted to make more of a difference than a regular dog. I knew I could help him out,” she told ABC. Learn more about Naki’o's touching story and take a look at his new kicks in the photo gallery and video below. — Global Animal

Cattaraugus County SPCA: A “Slow-Kill” Shelter?

(ANIMAL SHELTERS) Contrary to its claim to be a no-kill shelter, the Cattaraugus County SPCA in Olean, New York, is considered to be a perversion of no-kill by a number of former volunteers, board members, and concerned citizens. In fact, many are claiming the shelter is one of the more dangerous places for an animal to reside. Kelly Chaffee, former CCSPCA President and Board Member, has been quick to say that “the facility has been no-kill since 1985.” But many maintain that just because the animals are not euthanized at the shelter, does not mean that they are not emotionally and physically suffering. There is substantial proof regarding the neglect that these innocent animals suffer every single day. Animals at this facility are said to be confined in kennels for years, without socialization, veterinary care, or opportunities for placement into loving homes.
