White Russian Killer Whale (VIDEO)

(ANIMAL NEWS) RUSSIA — Researchers in the Far East Russia Orca Project have discovered the worlds only known all-white male orca. The footage released of “Iceberg,” named for the way the white dorsal fin looks coming up out of the water, shows the mammal swimming with his pod off Russia’s Commander Islands in the Bering Sea. The researchers announced that they are hoping to relocate the mammal this summer and find out whether Iceberg is a true albino orca, or just a beautiful, rare white version of the species. Indonesian ‘Zoo Of Death’ Loses Last Giraffe

(ANIMAL WELFARE) Surabaya Zoo, Indonesia’s largest zoo, continues to morph into an animal cemetery as yet another animal, the zoo’s last giraffe, died last week. The 30 year-old giraffe named Kliwon was discovered with a 40-pound wad of trash and plastic stuck in his belly—calling strong attention on the zoo’s appalling conditions.

Two years ago, Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry upended the zoo’s management after a string of animal deaths. However, conditions have yet to improve. An average of 25 animals are dying each month at this home to over 4,000 of the rarest species in the world. Camera Catches Rare “Spirit” Bear (GALLERY)

(CANADA) Photographer Paul Nicklen has captured images of the extremely rare Kermode “Spirit” bear in a British Columbia forest. A subspecies of the American black bear, the population is believed to only be around a few hundred. Brothers Capture Rare Hummingbird Images (GALLERY)

(BIRD GALLERY) VIRGINIA — Incredible photos that captured a unique albino ruby-throated hummingbird were taken by four boys on August 26 2011. A family owned and run magazine called Nature Friend Magazine featured the photos, and the owner’s young sons were the photographers. The brothers spent one and a half weeks waiting for the right moment to catch the bird on film. Their diligence proves that anyone can appreciate rare wildlife without doing any harm. Mystery Surrounds Baby Gorilla’s Death

(ENDANGERED ANIMALS) CHICAGO — On Friday a nine-day-old endangered western lowland gorilla died at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago. A necropsy, equivalent to a human autopsy, showed the death occurred from head trauma. Zoo authorities have yet to understand how the infant did but possibilities include injury from an attack of other gorillas or from the first-time mother accidentally sitting on her. Biologists say sharks like this are extremely rare and couldn’t survive more than a few days.
