(OCEANS) CALIFORNIA — A tour boat filled with passengers was taken by complete surprise last week after tens of thousands of dolphins spanning across seven miles of sea swarmed together off the coast of San Diego. As seen in a video uploaded to YouTube on Sunday, the boat’s passengers screamed and pointed as they witnessed what the ship’s captain called a “super mega-pod” jumping up and down in a feeding frenzy. Capt. Joe Dutra of Hornblower Cruisestold NBC Bay Area that he spotted the estimated 100,000 common dolphins on Thursday around noon while he was on his daily tour. (ANIMAL NEWS UPDATE) Cape Cod officials say that they have captured the black bear who has roamed the 60-mile stretch of the Cape since Memorial Day weekend. Local police found the bear on a resident’s property in Wellfleet at around 5PM EST on Monday. WCVB-TV reports that the bear was tranquilized by wildlife officials, fed water, and taken into custody, hopefully to be removed to a safer location. — Global Animal

(CRUSTACEANS) MAINE — A lobster caught off Winter Harbor, Maine is a 1-in-30 million find, even more rare than the 1-in-a million blue lobsters. The calico lobster is dark with bright orange and yellow spots, and is currently living at the New England Aquarium for the Biomes Marine Biology Center in Rhode Island. (ANIMAL NEWS) CHINA — Over 30 finless Yangtze river porpoises have been found dead within the last two months, a similar case to the thousands of dolphins found dead in the past two years. With their numbers greatly decreasing, The World Wildlife Fund is concerned that these rare animals are moving closer to extinction. While the exact cause of the deaths is unknown, scientists believe that these porpoises could be the victims of electro-fishing, boat-engine propellors, food shortages and pollution. (ANIMAL NEWS) RUSSIA — Researchers in the Far East Russia Orca Project have discovered the worlds only known all-white male orca. The footage released of “Iceberg,” named for the way the white dorsal fin looks coming up out of the water, shows the mammal swimming with his pod off Russia’s Commander Islands in the Bering Sea. The researchers announced that they are hoping to relocate the mammal this summer and find out whether Iceberg is a true albino orca, or just a beautiful, rare white version of the species.
