Westminster Dog Show Poisoning

(DOG SHOWS) There has been much speculation lately over whether a prized pet was deliberately poisoned while competing at the Westminster Kennel Club show earlier this month. Lynette Blue, the dog’s guardian, believes her 3-year-old prizewinning Samoyed named Cruz swallowed poison while at the show in Lakewood, Colorado, as his symptoms were consistent with dogs who ingest rat or mouse poison. And while the cause of death still remains unclear, Cruz’s handler, Robert Chaffin, believes extreme animal rights activists may have been to blame. But PETA co-founder and president Ingrid Newkirk said “it makes no sense whatsoever” that an animal rights activist would ever harm an animal. Others speculate jealousy between competitors could be the culprit. On the other hand, questions have also been raised regarding dogs shows in general, and particularly the American Kennel Club’s involvement (i.e. it will not permit neutered or spayed dogs in shows, but a debarked animal is allowed). “Silence of the Lambs” Breeders Shut Down

(DOG BREEDERS) The American Kennel Club’s (AKC) reputability has been in question for quite some time now. Last year, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) released a report accusing the AKC of allowing big commercial breeders to pass inspection even when their animals are kept in horrendous conditions like those found at puppy mills. Now, a Washington state couple—described as “seemingly the perfect people for raising and selling purebreds”—have been charged with animal cruelty after their premises were raided for raising their dogs in unbearable conditions. Despite living conditions that have been compared to a scene from Silence of the Lambs, the breeders were shockingly AKC registered and approved. The AKC is an organization that is supposed to protect dogs, but continuously fails to do its job. It’s time the AKC steps up and stops letting animal cruelty go unnoticed. Humane Society Unveils New AKC Puppy Mill Connection

(PUPPY MILLS) A new report released by the Humane Society brings to light more abuse of AKC-registered dogs at puppy mills and new shocking information about the organization. Numerous puppy-mill operators at facilities that passed AKC inspection have been charged with animal cruelty. The HSUS also found that in 2012 alone, the AKC asked its supporters to oppose many laws that would prevent animal abuse such as leaving dogs in hot cars, stacked wire cages, and keeping dogs in kennels for more then 14 hours a day.
