Hollywood’s Bought & Abandoned Fad Dogs

(ANIMAL ACTORS) From the silver screen to the viral menagerie of animals on YouTube, canine actors and other popularized pups inevitably fuel society’s fascination with certain dog breeds. At the same time, the opposite can also occur, where a film or television show portrays a dog in a negative light and depopularizes that particular breed. “Every time Hollywood makes a dog movie, the breed goes to hell,” says one caretaker of bouviers des Flandres dogs. Animals don’t always meet potential guardian’s expectations. And when their pet doesn’t behave like the animal portrayed on a television show or in a particular film, rescue organizations and animal shelters become flooded with popularized breeds. Legislators Side With Puppies, Not People

(PUPPY MILLS) MICHIGAN — The recent raid of an Alleghan County puppy mill in Kalamazoo, MI has strengthened a bill called the “puppy protection act.” Both sides of the state House and Senate support the bill, including Representatives Vicki Barnett (D) and Wayne Schmidt (R), and Senators Steve Bieda (D) and Rick Jones (R). Legislation hopes to protect pets from puppy mills by limiting the number of female dogs breeders can own, the number of litters bred, and introducing new health and diet guidelines. If Michigan’s state government doesn’t work at getting regulations passed, Michigan could become a hotspot for inhumane puppy mills. Ireland Bans Puppy Mills

(ANIMAL NEWS) IRELAND — The reference to Ireland as the Puppy Mill of Europe is one that legislators there hope to wipe out. Two 2012 laws require dog breeders to uphold certain standards and give local law enforcement the authority to shut breeders down if they don’t. Irish breeders can still have large numbers of dogs, but they can no longer raise them in dangerous, cramped conditions. By instating these regulations, legislators and authorities hope to find and shut down all the puppy mills in Ireland. We hope that other countries will follow suit. Read more about the new Irish puppy mill laws. — Global Animal
