Polar Bear Trade Ban Rejected
(WILDLIFE PROTECTION) A U.S. proposal to end the global trade of polar bear parts has been shut down at the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) meeting in Bangkok, Thailand. The ban proposal met opposition from Canada, Greenland, and Norway, countries that all have a financial stake in this sad trade. Approximately 800 bears are killed each year—most of them in Canada—and their pelts and heads, among other things, are sold internationally. Canada is also the only nation home to polar bears that allows hunting the animal for sport. It’s a shame that despite the major decline in polar bear populations due to climate change, these animals are still being killed for their skin. My Planet, My Part: See Polar Bears In The Wild
(ANIMAL CONSERVATION) Polar Bears International, the world’s largest organization dedicated to conserving polar bears, has recently launched a new initiative. In the midst of “polar bear migration season,” when ice reforms and the bears can return to hunting, PBI has debuted their online community My Planet, My Part. The communal site gives animal lovers and polar bear enthusiasts access to information about the species as well as how to help preserve their habitat. Visitors can interact with conservation experts, watch live HD videos of polar bears in the tundras of Canada, discover how to reduce their carbon footprint and learn about climate changes. In honor of the site’s debut, PBI is hosting a contest to find the next “polar bear ambassador” who will win a trip to see polar bears in Canada. Government Gives Polar Bears Cold Shoulder
(ANIMAL CONSERVATION) UNITED STATES — In lieu of the upcoming Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, the National Resource Defense Council is proposing a second attempt for the ban on trade of polar bear parts. The polar bear species has become more endangered since the rejection of the proposal two years ago and the NRDC is asking for activist support. Council members are urging conservationists to send personal letters to the Obama Administration encouraging the United States government to readmit the motion this year.
