Chief Saunooke Bear Park Shut Down

(ANIMAL WELFARE) Chief Saunooke Bear Park in Cherokee, North Carolina is finally being shut down following animal abuse allegations from prominent animal rights and conservation groups such as PETA. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has released an order this month to suspend the bear pit’s exhibitor license and fine the facility $20,000 after PETA revealed that it had uncovered evidence that the park failed to provide the bears with appropriate food, veterinary care, and safe housing. Delcianna Winders, a director at PETA, expressed her hopes that the bear park will remain closed for good and that the bears will be relocated to a reputable sanctuary. But unfortunately, despite the shutdown, the bears will likely remain with their owners for the time being. Air Canada Bans Shipment Of Primates

(ANIMAL TESTING) The Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) has finally permitted Air Canada to ban shipments of primates destined for laboratories. In its lengthy decision, the CTA points out that the airline received “over 47,000 letters from the public protesting its practice of transporting non-human primates for research purposes” and that Air Canada “cannot ignore the overwhelming volume of letters in opposition to the transport of non-human primates destined for research.” Although this is a major victory, there are still a few remaining airlines like United that are willing to ship primates to research labs. Take action and sign the petition urging airlines to stop transporting primates to laboratories. — Global Animal

MLB Pitcher & Pit Bull Thrown Curve Ball

(PIT BULLS) CANADA — This Tuesday, a blockbuster trade in Major League Baseball sent pitcher Mark Buehrle to Canada, but he and his dog might have problems settling in, seeing that Ontario has enforced a ban on pit bulls since 2005. This is not the first time Buehrle and his family have faced trouble moving to a new location solely because of the breed of their dog, Yahoo! Sports reports. Miami-Dade County, where his previous team the Miami Marlins were located, also enforces a law that does not allow pit bulls, or any other type of dog that resembles the breed. Give Dogs A Voice: Denounce Debarking

(DEBARKING) Sue Perry and Karen Mahmud are guardians of rescue dogs whose vocal chords have been surgically removed in a process called “devocalizing” or surgical muffling. Together, the duo has started an online petition requesting that the American Veterinary Medical Association condemn this invasive procedure. According to the American Veterinary Medical Aassocation, this surgery, medically termed venticulocordectomy, removes the animal’s vocal chords through the mouth or an incision in the throat. The organization rejects “debarking” unless it is deemed a “final alternative” in cases where the dog would otherwise be abandoned or euthanized. Perry and Muhmad believe that this exception still condones the cruel and unnatural surgery. While many critics agree, the surgery steals a dog’s primary means of communication and can also affect the animal’s ability to eat and breathe due to scar tissue from the procedure. Continue reading to see how you can help end this unnatural procedure. — Global Animal

America’s Disappearing Wild Horses

(ANIMAL PROTECTION) Eleven-year-old horse-lover Robin Warren, otherwise known as “Wild Mustang Robin,” has created a petition against government run horse round-ups. A compassionate young lady, Warren aims to defend the horses from the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) cruel attempts to control the wild horse population. With their use of heavy-duty helicopters, the government has been corralling wild equestrians and burros into holding pens in an attempt to allegedly control the burgeoning wild horse population and reclaim the land for agriculture and cattle ranching. Research Chimps Retired, Not Exactly Free

(ANIMAL TESTING) LOUISIANA — The National Institute of Health (NIH) revealed last month that they will be retiring 110 chimpanzees from a Louisianan research center in an attempt to help end animal testing. While ten of the chimps will be moved to a nearby sanctuary, the other 100 will be moved to another research institute in Texas. There, they will be ineligible for testing or research, but will be permitted to take part in any behavioral studies. The lucky ten chimpanzees en route to the sanctuary Chimp Haven will no longer have to suffer through animal testing. Read on for more on this bittersweet news. — Global Animal
