Jason Collins Scores For Gay Animals

(CULTURE) Praised NBA center Jason Collins has come out as gay in an article featured in Monday’s edition of Sports Illustrated. He is the first openly gay male professional athlete who is currently playing in a major sport. During a conversation with the acclaimed basketball player, President Barack Obama praised Collins for his bravery and gave the pro-athlete his full support. Not only is the President of the United States on Collin’s side, but the animal kingdom also has the NBA center’s back. Evidence of homosexual behavior is found throughout the animal world in many different species, including sheep and penguins. PETA Invests To Free SeaWorld Animals From Cement Prisons

(SEA WORLD) In another bold attempt to release SeaWorld’s enslaved animals back into the wild, PETA has recently announced it has purchased enough common stock in the cruel company to give the animal activism group rights to attend annual shareholder meetings and submit resolutions. The group’s ultimate goal is to free the long-imprisoned orcas, which have been a subject of controversy for many years. Whales can swim up to a 100 nautical miles in one day, and experts agree that putting them in a pool causes them great trauma—as was the case with Tilikum who killed two SeaWorld trainers after developing aggression due to a lifetime in captivity. Hopefully this move will be allow PETA to actually bring about change, rather than just waste money. Acclaimed Film Leaves Animal Activists Outraged

(ANIMAL RIGHTS) Animal activists seem less impressed than film critics with Rust and Bones, a recently released French-Belgian film starring Marion Cotillard. Animal rights organizations, including Animal Defenders International, advocate a boycott against the film, as orcas were used and kept in captivity for filming. SeaWorld Disappoints Yet Again

(SEA WORLD) SAN DIEGO— SeaWorld’s killer whale, Nakai, acquired a serious wound to his lower jaw. Whether a barrier in his enclosure or a confrontation with the other whales caused the injury is still a hot topic. If the gash had been caused by a confrontation with other orcas, SeaWorld would be in direct violation of the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). Believing SeaWorld has defied the AWA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has filed a federal complaint. “SeaWorld is fully aware of the social conflict, stress, agitation and resulting aggression and injury that it causes by housing these social and intelligent animals incompatibly, yet it continues to do so,” the complaint proclaims. — Global Animal

Animal Legal Defense Fund & PETA vs. Seaquarium

(ANIMAL WELFARE) Today, animal activists including the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF), PETA, the Orca Network, and private citizens filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) challenging the decision to renew Miami Seaquarium’s federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA) license. ALDF and PETA currently have another lawsuit pending against the National Marine Fisheries Service for excluding the last orca remaining at the marine park, Lolita, from the endangered list of Pacific Northwest’s Southern Resident orcas. Tommy Lee Says No To SeaWorld

(ANIMAL ACTIVISM) Tommy Lee, founding member of Motley Crue, is personally forbidding SeaWorld San Diego from using any tracks from his band’s records. With the risk of his tracks being used in any of the “Shamu Rocks” shows, Lee has come forward to refuse SeaWorld the rights and also remind the world how sensitive whales are to sound. While these orcas are already put in captivity against their will, they should not have to additionally endure high sound stress. Judge Holds SeaWorld Responsible For Trainer’s Death

(ANIMAL NEWS) A judge ruled today that SeaWorld is responsible for the death of orca trainer Dawn Brancheau. The SeaWorld trainer died during a show in 2010 when Tilikum, a male orca, pulled her underwater until she drowned. Charges were brought against SeaWorld by the Occupational and Safety Health Administration (OSHA). Humpback Whales Defend Gray Whale Calf

(WHALES) CALIFORNIA  — Off the coast of Monterey Bay, humpback whales attempted to defend a gray whale calf from a pod of killer whales in front of groups of whale watchers. The calf’s mother fought as best she could, but when the killer whales’ skilled attack was too much for her, the humpbacks stepped in.
