Photos Capture Animal Abuse In New Light

(PHOTO GALLERY) There are countless studies that prove animals are intelligent, express emotion and feel pain. There is also a direct correlation between animal abuse, domestic violence and other crimes. Yet animal abusers still go largely unpunished. Photographer Nicolas Wickstrom attempts to take us into the dark world of animal cruelty by substituting people in situations that involve the mistreatment of animals. Wickstrom explains his focus, “I aimed at inspiring more people to see the horrendous nature of what was going on and feel urged to do something, anything, to fix it.” Check out his photos. — Global Animal

Penguins Cleaned After New Zealand Oil Spill

(OIL SPILL) NEW ZEALAND — The beaches of New Zealand’s east coast were covered in oil after a ship carrying about half a million gallons of fuel collided with a reef this past week. The ship hit the Astrolabe Reef, only 14 miles from Tauranga Harbor, and oil has been washing up on a 3-mile stretch of land ever since the collision. Crews of a local wildlife rehabilitation facility are working hard to get birds and other wildlife cleaned up. BP To Turtles: Burn To Death Or Drown In Oil

Despite efforts to get sea turtles out of the water before they are scooped into a “burn box” of oil, conservationists believe turtles are being burned alive, if they aren’t already dead from BP’s oil damage. “I won’t pretend to know which is the nastiest,” says one researcher.
