(CELEBRITY PETS) Although The Hills star Lauren Conrad is known for her love of fashion and shopping, when it came to getting a puppy she chose an animal shelter rather than a store. Conrad, who’s already mom to a rescue dog named Chloe, adopted a new puppy last month. The little guy’s name is Fitz, and it appears his new guardian can’t get enough of him. Strut Your Mutt To Save Homeless Pets (VIDEO)

(ANIMAL ACTIVISTS) Every day, approximately 9,000 homeless pets are euthanized. The national non-profit organization, Best Friends Animal Society, is implementing no-kill programs and partnerships to support adoption and public spay/neuter programs in order to save these shelter animals. Last year, the organization raised $700,000 through the Strut Your Mutt fundraiser that includes a fun dog walk, dog yoga (“doga”), spa services and free treats for pets, and more. Adoptable pets will also be available on site. With more than 180 groups in the No More Homeless Pets® Network participating in the events and 8,000 registrants across the nine cities, Best Friends Animal Society hopes to raise $1 million this year. Playa Animal Rescue: Mexican Dog Haven

(ANIMAL SHELTERS) A new shelter in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico is helping out local four-legged residents. Opening its doors in April, 2012, Playa Animal Rescue (PAR) is a non-profit, no-kill shelter focused on rescuing street dogs. When there are millions of pets out there that need homes, are we doing everything that we can to help people adopt? Pet stores that sell commercially bred animals support abusive puppy mills, but some are turning to them anyway because they are easier to buy from than animal shelters.
