Not Funny: Hungover From Animal Death

(ANIMAL CRUELTY) Writer/Director Todd Phillips’ third installment of The Hangover Trilogy certainly has its moments, but falls far short of capturing the magic that made the first film so charming. And in its portrayal of animals, it plummets down a dark and nasty path, never to recover. There are many scenes in Hangover III that are supposed to be funny, but are merely ghastly or cruel, depicting the deaths of numerous animals. Read on for more on the film’s tasteless decision to swap good humor for cruelty. — Global Animal

Disney’s ‘Wings Of Life’ Soars High

(MOVIE REVIEW) Originally released in France under the title Pollen in 2011, Disneynature’s Wings of Life has finally made it to worldwide audiences. Much like the 2012 film Chimpanzee, Wings of Life is short, but particularly sweet. Coming in at only 77 minutes, the documentary uses its time proficiently in order to deliver its increasingly important message. The opening title card of the film reads: “Life depends on little things we take for granted,” a theme that rests at the core of Wings of Life. Focusing on the vital relationship between flowers, and the animals that interact with them, the documentary explores a complex world often taken for granted. Hollywood’s Bought & Abandoned Fad Dogs

(ANIMAL ACTORS) From the silver screen to the viral menagerie of animals on YouTube, canine actors and other popularized pups inevitably fuel society’s fascination with certain dog breeds. At the same time, the opposite can also occur, where a film or television show portrays a dog in a negative light and depopularizes that particular breed. “Every time Hollywood makes a dog movie, the breed goes to hell,” says one caretaker of bouviers des Flandres dogs. Animals don’t always meet potential guardian’s expectations. And when their pet doesn’t behave like the animal portrayed on a television show or in a particular film, rescue organizations and animal shelters become flooded with popularized breeds. Read on to learn more about the impact that famous dogs in the media have on particular breeds. — Global Animal

Life of Pi: Animal Friendly Or Not?

(ANIMAL ACTORS) Ang Lee’s successful 3D adventure film, Life of Pi, was nominated in eleven categories at the 85th Academy Awards and won more than any other film, including Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects and Best Original Score. Earning $583 million worldwide, the international hit chronicles the story of a boy who survives a shipwreck, only to be stranded on a boat with a Bengali Tiger. But as always, when it comes to movies involving real animals, concerns of safety come into question. Although the movie’s main animal character, Richard Parker, is mostly CGI, four live tigers were used to film single shots. The Hobbit’s Death Trap Kills 27 Animals

(ANIMAL WELFARE) According to animal wranglers involved in filming The Hobbit, the film’s production company is at fault for the deaths of 27 animals, largely because they were kept on an unsafe farm. However, according to a recent statement issued by director Peter Jackson, these allegations are false as he claims that some animals perished from natural causes. A representative for Jackson acknowledged the deaths, but insists that hundreds of thousands of dollars were spent to ensure animal safety during shooting. Despite the claim that no animals were harmed during filming, animal wranglers have spoken out to the AP, alleging that the farm posed a hazard for horses and other animals due to unsafe land filled with sinkholes and bluffs. The involved animal wranglers claim that concerns were brought to Warner Brothers’ attention, but the production company chose to continue its use of the farm. In response to the news, PETA officials state, “letting animals suffer needlessly and die takes the entertainment industry a giant and disgraceful step backward.” Read on to learn more about the abuse allegations and take our poll: “Will you boycott The Hobbit over its treatment of animals?” — Global Animal

Acclaimed Film Leaves Animal Activists Outraged

(ANIMAL RIGHTS) Animal activists seem less impressed than film critics with Rust and Bones, a recently released French-Belgian film starring Marion Cotillard. Animal rights organizations, including Animal Defenders International, advocate a boycott against the film, as orcas were used and kept in captivity for filming. Animals should never serve as entertainment, and we hope activist efforts can help end this trend of animal exploitation. — Global Animal
