Russia Blasts Animals Into Space

(CULTURE) On Friday, a Russian rocket carrying a capsule of mice, newts, gerbils, geckos, and various other species was blasted off into orbit around the earth for a one-month mission. The cruel experiment is designed to see how various life forms react in space for long stretches of time and is expected to help pave the way for manned flights to Mars. The animals will be monitored from the ground are are expected to return home alive. Yet unfortunately upon their arrival, they will be “humanely euthanized” in order to collect data. Giant Mice Kill Rare Sea Bird

(ENDANGERED SPECIES) The extremely remote Gough Island, the world’s only known breeding ground for the endangered Atlantic petrel, is under attack by giant mice. Since being introduced to the island 150 years ago, the mice have grown immensely, both physically and in population size, due to the overwhelming amount of petrel chicks they consume. New Rule Offers Clarity For Endangered Species

(ANIMAL RIGHTS) WASHINGTON — A new rule proposed by the Obama administration would allow endangered species to have the same protection across state lines, giving the government a greater ability to enforce the Endangered Species Act and animals under it. State governments would be forced to adhere with national protections, or lack thereof, for animals such as the gray wolf. The rule would allow better chances for locating and recovering listed species.
